One of those weekends that every person who’s ever been a tow truck operator will sympathize with me a little. Yesterday, I popped down in my easy chair, snack on my night stand, to watch my beloved MSU Bulldawgs play a game that I believe they can win. The phone hasn’t rung all day. Dawgs are in the huddle after the first play of the game. Wrecker phone rings. Grrrrrr. Lady needs me to tow her car because it’s “stripped out an axle”. Any wrecker driver reading this is mumbling to himself, “Broken ball joint....”. Yep. Grrrrrr again. Broken ball joints (usually) are a real pain. Get it done. Get home in time to see most of the second half. This afternoon, same scenario, except it’s a NASCAR race. Between “Drivers start your engines” and the cars heading onto the track, the wrecker phone rings. Grrrrr. Nice family is at the Ford place. They’ve driven quite a distance and now they’ve discovered that there’s a kitten somewhere in the suspension of their automobile and they would like for me to come see if I can help them get it out. My first order of business was to make sure they’re not going to give me this kitten when we get it out. They assured me that they would keep it. While we were trying to locate the kitten, he came pimping out from under the car. Good deal. I hustle back to Casa de Hays to watch the race. It’s about 25 laps in. I see about 7 laps. Wrecker phone rings again. GRRRRRR!! Our other driver letting me know there’s a wreck in town. It’s his weekend off, so I take care of that. Hustle home and see the last fourth of the race. That’s how it be sometimes. I love what I do and I’m not complaining about getting business that allows us to eat hot food and sleep in a warm bed, so I’m gonna get up and roll every time the phone rings. It’s just that, sometimes, it can rough you up a little....
We had a great turnout today to escort and say goodbye to our friend and fellow tow truck operator, Sammy Coleman, from Starkville to Morgantown. It did our hearts good to do this and I know that Beth, Justin and the rest of Sammy’s family appreciated it, too. Thanks to everyone who joined us. RIP Sammy! We’re gonna miss you, man.
Just worked a two car wreck in which a young man had the misfortune of colliding with a patrol car. That has to suck. On the other hand, he didn’t have to wait for an officer to arrive..... Best part is that everyone walked away.
It never ceases to amaze me how much a person, who got arrested the night before, knows about the legal system. I recently towed a vehicle whose driver was arrested by one of the local law enforcement agencies. When the driver came to pick up his vehicle he told me they locked him up on bogus charges and he was going to beat the rap. I hear this a lot. It’s usually things like, “He didn’t have probable cause to stop me.” or “The breathalyzer hasn’t been calibrated...”. Things like that. I guess they think that if their story is good for the tow man, it might work for the judge, too. 😜. I always let them talk, because sometimes I hear a good one. This one was good. He got pulled over for a light being out and locked up for suspended driver’s license. He said he was going to beat it and they would pay back his tow bill. His exact words, “They can’t charge me for driving with a suspended license, because I ain’t never had no driver’s license. How the hell can they suspend something I ain’t never had?” I told him that was a about as good of a defense as I’d ever heard and to let me know how it worked out. Still waiting to hear from him.
We really love this type of letter. We’ve been blessed with some good and some really good drivers over the years and Brandon Fowler has kept that streak alive.
I like to believe this is true. I know it is with me
