Ant Infestations: More than Meets the Eye
We truly appreciate when customers take the time to let us know how we are doing! We are glad John was able to assist you with your pest control needs!
You may want to think twice about using perfume or cologne. Mosquitoes are more attracted to certain scents or smells.
Why does it seem as though there are wasps everywhere?
Wasps are known to bombard picnics, create nests around playgrounds, and show up while mowing the lawn.
Did you know there are a variety of different wasps? The attached New York Times article does a greet job at providing a little information about the different types of wasps and when you may come in contact with them this summer.
Here is a quick glance at the different pests:
* Paper wasps: aka "Smarty Pants. They are known to have very interesting hierarchies.
* Cicada killers: "Solitary Wasps"
* Yellow Jackets: "Scavengers"
* Bald faced hornets: "Architects" (type of yellow jacket).
Please give us a call if you have any further questions or concerns. We can also come out today to provide you with a free estimate.

There are many things that can be done by homeowners to battle mosquito infestation. One of the biggest culprits is standing water in your backyard. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so be sure to empty buckets or cans that may have filled up with rain water.
The following article talks about ways to prevent and combat mosquito infestation in the Morris County area. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!

Pest Control is so essential, even bears won't stop us from eliminating pests!
FYI- It is that time of year when unwanted guests are coming into our homes. Be sure to secure your garbage cans and check screens for holes. Lastly, bird feed attracts unwanted rodents and wildlife.

Do you live within the boundaries where the spotted lanternfly (SLF) infestation is present (Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, Mercer, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Salem)?
Many people are unaware of the infestation; however, learning a little about this invasive species can go a long way.
The SLF is a threat to both NJ and the US. They can potentially impact agricultural crops and hardwood trees. Furthermore, they lay egg masses wherever they choose and all life stages have the ability to fly, hop, or fall onto your vehicles and/or belongings.
Interestingly, the SLF feed on an eclectic array of host plants such as woody trees, vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, ornamental trees, grains and vines.

Where do insects go during the winter?
There are a multitude of tactics insects use to survive the colder months.
1. They migrate to warmer places.
2. Overwinter- They find the warmer cracks in bark and sidings of homes. I have found hundreds of marmorated stink bugs in window casings when the temperature starts warming up in spring. That is a convenient place for insects to overwinter.
3. Insect hibernation, aka diapause. This hibernation can occur at every stage of development!
As shared in the who knew picture, the mosquito species uses two tactics from above...overwinter and diapause!
We have also read that some insects can produce antifreeze in their bodies or blood. What are your thoughts?
Winter Weather Increases Risk for Allergies & Asthma Attacks!!
Did you know cockroaches seek shelter from the cold which could mean trouble for allergy sufferers?
Most people think of pollen, dust and animal dander as common asthma and allergy triggers. However, cockroaches can also pose a threat to allergy and asthma sufferers. The threat for cockroach allergens is elevated in the winter because there is a greater chance for cockroaches to invade homes in search of warmth and because families spend more time inside.
"Children are the most at risk to be affected by this often-overlooked asthma trigger," said Natasha Orenczak, General Manager. "Cockroaches spread over 33 types of bacteria, including E. coli and studies show that about one in five children in the U.S. are sensitive to cockroach allergens."
The National Pest Management (NPMA) advises homeowners to seal cracks around the outside of their home, keep counters and floors clean and free of crumbs that can attract the pests and vacuum frequently. Kitchens and bathrooms are particularly vulnerable to cockroach infestations due to the presence of food products and moisture around sinks and appliances.
If you suspect you have an infestation, contact a licensed pest professional who will be able to recommend a course of treatment.

Many people have a fear of spiders, but the fact is, most species actually pose no threat to humans. They are actually beneficial insects that "take care of" other harmful insects. Four common spiders in New Jersey are the Yellow Sac Spider, American House Spider, Wolf Spider and the Black Widow.
Although the Yellow Sac Spider is known to be a bit aggressive, their bite is not poisonous.
The American House Spider is known to be much more timid and will actually "play dead" when it feels threatened.
Fortunately, the wolf spider is not aggressive; however, they will definitely bite if you pester them. They typically live in the ground and prefer garages, sheds and basements.
Lastly, black widow spiders are active at night and the female is known to live much longer than males (3 years compared to 1-4 months)! They are very poisonous and produce toxins that are 15 times stronger than the venom of rattlesnakes.
Pestworld.org provides various pest guides. Click on the link to learn more facts about different spiders and how to keep them out of the home.

Have you ever seen a perfectly circular spider's web?
Kristen Currie stated, "Often times, the center (of a spider's web) is slightly displaced towards the upper edge. And while resting, spiders tend to point their heads down – towards gravity – to get to their prey faster."
NASA scientists have observed the same thing and wondered what spider's would do without gravity...so they sent them to space!

This is a question we get often: Do carpenter ants eat wood?
The answer to that is...no. Carpenter ants do not eat wood; however, you definitely don't want them in or around your home.
The attached article is written by Wizzie Brown, a program specialist at Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service. Wizzie does a great job at describing how to identify a carpenter ant as well as differentiated them from termites, what they eat and what to do if you think you have them in your home.
Carpenter ants can be found throughout the state of New Jersey and are quite the nuisance. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Who is ready for a joke!?!
Who said: I'm so hungry, I could eat a house....
A colony of termites!
A termite colony eats 24/7. That is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Colonies can have upwards of 2 million members! Furthermore, the queen termite can lay up to 40,000 eggs per day.
As the weather gets warmer, be on the lookout for termite activity. They are silent destroyers and you may be providing them with free meals!
What would happen if you dumped half a million termites into one enclosed area? Sounds like a nightmare, right?
Check out @PestWorld’s Tiny Termite House project where half a million termites were dumped onto a miniature home to show just how destructive they truly are! #TAW
