I got a call from a deputy sheriff who had been in a pretty bad wreck a few days ago and wanted to get a lawyer. He was banged up and his back hurt but nothing obviously surgical or permanent. After talking with him for 10 minutes I ended the conversation with "lets give it 10 days. Hopefully you feel better and never have to talk to me again." As I so often hear, he told me I don't talk like a lawyer (which I always take as a compliment). While it isn't always possible, a dead dude's advice is still applicable: Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser -- in fees, expenses, and waste of time.
Needed to give a shout out to our office manager / legal assistant extraordinaire Lisa Stauffer Fowler. The transmission in her car went out and rather than call in like a normal person, she gets a ride from her husband, meaning she gets here an hour early every day until it can get fixed. Hopefully she forgets about this before her review in January or we might have to give her a raise!
