Last summer residents at our sister community in Kirkwood, Missouri, snapped photos to show the views from their porches and balconies. They didn't have mountains or the Garden of the Gods nearby like we do, but see what they see. Aberdeen Heights Senior Living August 4, 2020 at 4:30 PM · What started as a simple photo-sharing idea from Courtney Bruns has blossomed into this beautiful slideshow with music. A few weeks ago Martha Kaelble put out a request for Aberdeen Heights Senior Living residents to submit pictures of views from their porches and balconies. She suggested sunsets, gardens, streets, courtyards, etc. and gave a deadline of July 31. Tom Mitchell volunteered to combine the pictures with captions from Martha and create a video we could show on our in-house channel so all our residents can see it. What a team Martha and Tom made, figuring out how to make it all work over text messages. Martha is making a display for our hallway to allow residents and staff to look at printed photos at their leisure. Many thanks to Courtney for suggesting the project, and to Martha and Tom for all your hard work to make this happen so quickly. 👏👏👏

In September residents at our sister community in Kirkwood, Missouri, were happy to resume water volleyball practice while maintaining safe protocols given the covid situation. We're all looking forward to engaging in more activities like this as things improve. Aberdeen Heights Senior Living September 7, 2020 at 12:52 PM · Water volleyball practices at Aberdeen Heights have resumed with Covid-19 physical distancing and sanitizing protocols. 😁 Everyone is having a good time while learning to adapt. 25 residents signed up for the activity. As protocols allow only 10 players in the pool rather than the usual two 9-person teams, we reduced team size, added another day of practice, formed 4 teams and developed a rotation schedule. Now everyone can play up to twice a week. Mark Adams, our new coach, leads practices once a week. He will schedule matches with other teams (when that becomes possible) and select teams for the 2021 St. Louis Senior Olympics. For now our athletes are staying active and building their skills. 🏐

Palm Sunday marks the transition from Lent into Holy Week. While Lent began with ashes as we remembered we are dust and unto dust we will return, Palm Sunday is a celebration as the anointed King of Kings enters the Holy City… on a donkey? Yes. Once again, Jesus took the path of humility, as he does when he washes the feet of the disciples and lays down his life freely. As Pope Francis shared last year in his special blessing on Good Friday, the COVID-19 crisis, “exposes our vulnerability.” He said faith begins when we realize we are not self-sufficient. God turns to good everything that happens to us, even the bad things, bringing “serenity into our storms, because with God, life never dies.” With humility and faithfulness, we celebrate #HolyWeek and embrace hope. #PalmSunday

In the past, it wasn’t uncommon for seniors to move from their family home into an assisted living community only when this assistance became necessary. Nowadays, more and more healthy and active retirees are opting for independent living communities where they can enjoy conveniences and amenities catered to their desired lifestyle and leave behind day-to-day responsibilities of traditional homeownership. So what’s the difference between independent and assisted living? We discuss the differences in cost, amenities and care here: aberdeenridge.org/blog/independent-living-vs-assisted-living
