Beth Brown is a Senior Social Worker supporting patients who have various neurological conditions, autism, intellectual disabilities, learning differences, and vision and hearing conditions, from the time of infancy to adulthood. Having worked at Mount Sinai for over 33 years, she calls it her “professional home” and has developed relationships with her patients and their families. Beth finds it important to advocate for early intervention, special education, and support services for patients and finds it rewarding to teach and counsel families on their legal rights. With recent technological advances and the use of people-first language in addressing people with disabilities, she is hopeful that the Center will continue to make a change in the everyday lives of its patients.

The number of drug addicts who developed vision-endangering eye infections quadrupled between 2003 and 2016, according to researchers. "Pathogens injected into the bloodstream through IV drug use can spread to many different organs, often causing infections in heart valves, the brain and other organs. Often, the eyes are one of the first organs to be noticeably affected by such an infection", said Dr. Richard Rosen, a retina surgeon with the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai.

Two years ago, doctors at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital performed a ‘medical miracle’ on Lexi. Born without a bladder and with both kidneys blocked, she first underwent surgery at age six so doctors could create an artificial bladder. In January 2019, she received a kidney transplant, with her father as the donor.
Today, Lexi is doing great! Luther, Lexi’s father and kidney donor, said, “Donating my kidney was the greatest thing I've done because nothing has given me more joy than watching Lexi grow and laugh and develop as a healthy, happy, and strong young lady with a long life ahead of her with the support of her mother, sister, and medical team.“
Mount Sinai's Dr. Hilary Hotchkiss said, “Lexi has come a long way, and at each step, she has been incredibly brave. With help from her parents, Lexi makes sure she takes her medicine every day to keep her transplant kidney healthy.”
According to Dr. Monica Dweck, there are many types of #glaucoma. Babies, teenagers, and young adults can get glaucoma. But glaucoma is usually associated with people over the age of 40 and with high pressure in the eye. This causes changes at the back of the eye, the optic nerve, which can lead to loss of vision and, ultimately, blindness: https://mshs.co/ke #GlaucomaAwarenessMonth

“Rio Rivera, a phlebotomist at Mount Sinai Queens, is exceptional! She is excellent at prioritizing ‘stat’ labs to ensure that they arrive to the lab in a timely manner, improving patient outcomes. She is hard-working, kind to all patients and staff, professional, and efficient. I appreciate that she takes her time with hard sticks, accepts challenges, and really does her best to locate the best vein and minimize the number of times a patient is stuck with a needle—decreasing their pain and risk of infection. And very importantly, she is usually very successful at getting the specimen we need! She is a team player. We are so lucky to have her!”

"As a surgeon, being in the operating room is one of the best parts of my workweek. I will spend a few hours each week reviewing my cases prior to being in surgery — planning out my steps and thinking through any alternative steps — so I am completely prepared. In the operating room, it’s just me and my surgical team working together to fix a patient’s injury. No emails or texts or phone calls to interrupt — just complete focus on putting stitches in a torn tendon or constructing a new ligament or repairing a broken bone," says Mount Sinai Orthopedics' Dr. Alexis Colvin, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Associate Dean for Alumni Affairs at Mount Sinai, via Medium: https://mshs.co/yM

We are live with Dr. Sharma discussing the Mount Sinai Home Dialysis Program in honor of National Kidney Month.
Each week, 220 patients visit the Mount Sinai Kidney Center in East Harlem for maintenance hemodialysis therapy—a challenging regimen to maintain under optimal conditions, but even more so during the #COVID19 pandemic. Each visit increases the patients’ risk of infection, and comorbidity increases their risk of mortality.
“Although there are patients who contracted COVID-19 and subsequently developed #kidney failure requiring dialysis or additional care, our patients are people whose kidneys failed prior to COVID-19 and who require dialysis three times a week,” says Dr. Vijay Lapsia. Read more in our specialty report: https://mshs.co/CE #NationalKidneyMonth
"The infrastructure for health preparedness is limited. This is a major reason why disadvantaged communities are disproportionately impacted by public health emergencies. When large scale crises hit, hospitals are stretched dangerously thin and forced to do unimaginable things — like build a field hospital in Central Park — in order to save lives."

The next pandemic is coming. Will we be prepared?
“As I look at these images, what I see is staff, nurses, techs, and doctors, providing care for very sick and fragile patients,” says Peter Shearer, MD, FACEP, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Medical Staff, at Mount Sinai Brooklyn.
He adds, “One year into this pandemic we only have a few, modestly effective new medications for COVID-19. What keeps these patients from dying is the endless care that staff provides: care is encouraging confused patients to keep their uncomfortable oxygen masks on; care is helping a patient spend time lying on their belly; care is ambulating patients so they don’t weaken during their stay. Providing this care is hard work, and these people have been doing it day and night for over a year. The staff also provides care to co-workers, and that sense of community keeps us going.”
