Tips & Tricks: Keeping Your HVAC Equipment Safe in Snow Storms

Due to the inclement weather, our business office and operations will be closed on Thursday December 17th. If you are a Comfort Family Plan or Preventative Maintenance Agreement customer and you need assistance, our emergency line is available to you. To contact our emergency line please call: 860-666-4200 and press option 3.
During a major snowstorm, it is essential to monitor the snowfall outside of your home - the buildup can create issues with your HVAC system.
To keep your systems running safely and efficiently during a snowstorm, remember to:
1. Make sure that all vents leading to the outside of your home are clear of blockage to provide proper ventilation.
2. Make sure all outside heat pump and Mitsubishi Ductless units are cleaned off, and snow is shoveled away from and around the unit.
3. Continue to check and clear snow or ice buildup around vents and outdoor units throughout the storm.
4. If your power goes out, most HVAC systems ignite automatically with electricity.
Basic Troubleshooting tips:
• Check the outdoor heat pump or ductless unit [ if applicable]. If it is not running, take a look at your circuit breaker or electrical panel in your home and make sure everything is in the ON position.
• Switch at the unit itself and at the “top of the stairs” is in the ON position
• Thermostat.....is it on? Does it have low batteries? Is it set to heat and is the temperature set above the room temperature?
As we wait for the first snow of the season, we wanted to share some great safety tips, reminders and inspiration from our friends at the Colchester Hayward Volunteer Fire Company.
*Try to keep up with the storm, shoveling or snow blowing every few hours is more manageable.
*Dress warms in layers, one of which should be your ugly holiday sweater.
*Push do not lift, when clearing snow, an injury is not fun. The EMT Team really does not want to have to come out to take you to a hospital.
*Stay hydrated even in cold weather this is important.
*Watch those fingers. Never use your hands to clear a clog in your snow blower. Use a tool or long stick to clear. A broom handle works great.
*Generator use-If you lose power, keep your Generator away from your house and any windows or doors. Keep the area around the Generator free from snow. Remember to make a path to your fuel tank or fill location, and clear any exhaust locations if you have a gas or propane heating system.
*Make Cocoa, relax and watch the snow fall.
Our office will be closing at 12:00pm Christmas Eve, 12/24/2020 and closed on Christmas Day 12/25/20. We will resume normal office hours on Monday 12/28/2020.

NATIONAL PFEFFERNUSSE DAY
December 23rd is reserved for National Pfeffernusse Day, a German spice cookie. Very popular around the holidays, pfeffernusse are fluffy cookies made with ground nuts and spices and covered in powdered sugar.
The exact origin of the cookie is unknown. However, the Dutch believe that pfeffernusse (or peperone) are linked to the feast of Sinterklaas, which is celebrated on December 5 in the Netherlands and December 6 in Germany and Belgium. This holiday is when children receive gifts from St. Nicholas, who is partially the inspiration for the Santa Claus tradition.
Over time, many bakers have created their own pfeffernusse recipes. Traditional methods included various nuts such as almonds and walnuts. Some modern recipes exclude nuts altogether along with the black pepper, retaining only cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice and cardamom as flavorings. Bakers also use molasses and honey to sweeten the cookie.

Kwanzaa is an African American and pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community, and culture. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of African Studies.
