Amanda Gorman -- the first person ever to be named a National Youth Poet Laureate. Most recently Amanda has been recognized for her performance in the 2021 Inauguration of Joe Biden of her poem, “The Hill We Climb.” She was featured in the 2021 #superbowl performance honoring essential employees and healthcare workers.
Growing up, Amanda was challenged by a speech impediment and an auditory processing disorder which makes her hypersensitive to sound. However, those obstacles didn’t stop her as she was accepted into Harvard University and graduated cum laude in 2020.
On being selected as one of Glamour magazine’s 2018 “College Women of the Year”, she said: “Seeing the ways that I as a young black woman can inspire people is something I want to continue in politics. I don’t want to just speak works; I want to turn them into realities and actions.”
Some fun facts about Amanda:
• She is 22 years old
• She hopes to run for President in 2036
• She is a twin, her sister’s name is Gabrielle
• Amanda is a two-time bestselling author
• She listens to historically-inspired music while writing

In honor of Black history month, we are highlighting Juneteenth — a celebration of the end of slavery in the south. While President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, 1863, legally ended slavery, many of the southern states, including Texas, were unaware that slaves were now free. For the next two and a half years slavery continued in the southern states until June 19, 1865 in which the Union army announced that more than 250,000 black enslaved people in the state were free. This day became known as Juneteenth and is still highly celebrated in Texas.
By 1916 African Americans were moving from their homes in the south in what is known as The Great Migration, a black exodus in which more than 6 million African Americans moved to the West, Mid-west and the North to avoid racially harsh living conditions. The history and celebration of Juneteenth spread to these areas and continues to be celebrated by African Americans today.
Get ready for Round 2 of #AHCCS Super Smash Bro’s Ultimate Tournament! Will you choose Falco, Young Link, or Fox? Or are you more of a Yoshi, Pikachu, or Kirby player? Happy #PiDay! In case you didn't know, Pi Day is the annual observance of the mathematical constant π. It's observed on March 14 because it 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π! The earliest observance of this holiday was in 1988, when physicist Larry Shaw marched with his fellow coworkers in San Francisco, around one of the city's circular roads. They then consumed fruit pies as a treat. Given its cheeky name, today is usually celebrated by either eating pie, throwing pies, or baking them.

Consider celebrating the holiday with us by planting your own flower! Post a photo with the hashtag, #AchievementHouse!

It’s #teachertuesday! Meet #AHCCS teacher Nicole Longenecker! When Nicole is not teaching, she likes to read, hike, crochet, travel and spend time with her family. If she is not getting lost in Venice, Rome or Florence (no, really, Nicole got lost three times in Italy!), she’s getting lost in books, like The Aeneid, written in 19 BC.
A former band student in high school and college, Nicole has always been a fan of the arts and continues to share that passion with her students today. Teaching literature and learning languages that aren’t widely used, she can recite the prologue of The Canterbury Tales in Middle English. Can you guess what instrument Nicole played in band? Drop your guess in the comments below!
Here’s a few courses that Nicole teaches at Achievement House:
CP American Literature
Honors Global Literature
Creative Writing
Graphic Novels
