In a recent study, patients who were given acupuncture prior to having surgery needed less morphine to manage their pain. Those who were given acupuncture needed about three times less morphine than those who did not receive acupuncture. They also were less anxious after the surgery. There was also less of a need for opioids. In the 24 hours after surgery, the control (those who didn’t receive acupuncture) needed twice the dosage of opioids than those who received acupuncture.
