Think you get good gas mileage? The Volkswagen XL-1 thinks otherwise. Rated at 261 mpg with a drag coefficient of 0.189 (less than a cyclist in the Tour de France) the XL-1 is the most fuel efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world.
With that kind of mileage you’ll have to sacrifice a few things – like a rear view mirror (the XL-1 doesn’t have one) which makes sense since it also doesn’t have a rear window, or a back seat. The XL-1’s top speed is only 99 mph and it is also a bit sluggish out of the gate with an acceleration rate of 0 to 60 in 12.7 seconds. (A ’93 Ford Taurus does it in 11.1.) Another thing that might slow you down is the XL-1’s sticker price: $130,000. VW announced that only 250 will be built and sold this year.
