Dr. Song performing a kyphoplasty using Medtronic’s new Kyphon assist directional cannula at Northern Nevada Medical Center. This device allows the surgeon to accurately place ‘bone cement’ to heal compression fractures from traumatic injuries, falls, as well as for other health reasons such as osteoporosis. Patients usually notice an improvement in symptoms by the time they wake up in recovery!

PRACTICE UPDATES: Advanced Neurosurgery continues to be open from 8:30-5 PM Monday through Friday for appointments, calls, and refill requests. We are still implementing screening protocol for all patients and ask that if you have any fevers, cough, sore throat, or difficulty breathing that you kindly reschedule your appointment. The satisfaction of taking out a disc herniation is almost as satisfying for Dr. Song as it is for the patient! A disc herniation compressing on a nerve root can cause radiculopathy, or symptoms of pain, numbness, tingling, and/or weakness in a patient’s upper or lower extremities.
Oftentimes, a procedure called a microdiscectomy can be done to decompress the nerve. Most patients will feel immediate improvement of pain after surgery. However, multiple factors can affect one’s outcome such as duration of injury and severity of symptoms, to name a few.

Before and After: this patient had a compression fracture that got worse despite using a brace under the direction of another surgeon. Because of the significant change and increase in curvature (kyphosis) in this area, the patient opted for surgery. Alignment is improved!
