Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! We have three people in the office who have Hispanic heritage. Dr. Biggerstaff’s mother is from Mexico (and makes awesome tamales). Dr. Parker’s paternal grandmother is from Mexico. Myara, who recently joined our team, has roots in Mexico as well. Hispanic Heritage Month began as Hispanic Heritage Week. Hispanic Heritage Week was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968. In 1988, the commemorative week was expanded to a month (September 15 to October 15) by legislation signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the commemoration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Hispanic countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, who all declared independence in 1821. In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16, September 18, and September 21, respectively. National Hispanic Heritage Month was first proclaimed by President George H. W. Bush on September 14, 1989. Since 1989, all presidents have given a Presidential Proclamation to mark Hispanic Heritage Month. #nationalhispanicheritagemonth #hispanicheritagemonth #oralsurgery #oralsurgeon #oralandmaxillofacialsurgeon #oralandmaxillofacialsurgery #maxillofacialsurgery #dentalimplants

The month of February is a time to honor and celebrate Black History Month and all of the powerful figures of past and present that have made an impact on our communities.
African Americans have played a vital role in dentistry throughout the history of the United States. Some of the most notable trailblazers are Dr. Robert Freeman, the first African American to receive a dental degree in the United States, or Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins, who was the first African American woman to receive her dental degree.
Specifically in the world of oral surgery, it is only fitting to spotlight on Dr. Roscoe F. Lee. After graduating from Howard University’s College of Dentistry in 1922, he joined the staff of Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, DC where he furthered his oral surgery training and studies. He was later appointed the Chief of Oral Surgery and headed the department until 1936. After an official examination in 1947, Dr. Lee became the first certified Diplomate of the American Board or Oral Surgery.
Advanced Oral and Facial Surgery celebrates the contributions and achievements of these and other Black Americans throughout our history!
