Seeing blood in your urine can be alarming. While in many instances the cause is harmless, blood in urine (hematuria) can indicate a serious disorder. All blood in the urine should be evaluated to rule out a cancer. However, most of the time, the blood is related to a benign condition, such as a urinary tract infection, bladder or kidney stone, kidney injury, medications, or even strenuous exercise. Always see one of our provider if you see blood in the urine.

About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. About 42,170 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2020 from breast cancer. Death rates have been steady in women under 50 since 2007, but have continued to drop in women over 50. The overall death rate from breast cancer decreased by 1.3% per year from 2013 to 2017. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances and earlier detection through screening. For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.

Whether or not to have surgery for pelvic organ prolapse is an individual decision. The success or failure of someone else's operation should never be the deciding factor for you. Every woman's situation is different. There is no single operation that is right for every patient. You and your urogynecologist must decide on the best option together. Pelvic reconstructive surgery can be performed through an incision in the vagina, through an incision made through the abdominal wall, or through a series of small incisions in the abdomen through which the surgeon places a laparoscope and instruments. Surgeons can also perform it with the assistance of a robot. Discuss the advantages and disadvantage of each of these approaches with one of our surgeons.

Also, know at least three generations of history (parents, children, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other close relatives). Our providers can use this information to determine if genetic testing is right for you.

About 5-10% of breast cancers can be linked to known gene mutations inherited from one’s mother or father. Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the most common. On average, women with a BRCA1 mutation have up to a 72% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. For women with a BRCA2 mutation, the risk is 69%. Breast cancer that is positive for the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations tends to develop more often in younger women. An increased ovarian cancer risk is also associated with these genetic mutations.

Bone health is affected quite a bit by our lifestyle. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of bone fractures by 15%. A sedentary lifestyle, lack of exposure to sunlight, nutritional deficiencies, and excessive alcohol or coffee are other factors that promote osteoporosis. To maintain bone health, 1,000–1,500 mg/day of calcium (including food sources and supplements) is recommended. Calcium citrate is absorbed better than other forms of calcium and does not tend to cause gastric distress. To prevent hip and non-vertebral fractures, you will likely need 700–800 IU/day of vitamin D (cholecalciferol). Weight-bearing exercises, including weight training, hiking, climbing stairs, and walking, force the bones to work against gravity and are effective at increasing bone mass.

Many women will try to treat menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, emotional changes, and difficulty sleeping, with natural remedies. Supplements like Black Cohash, Dong Quai, Ginseng, Kava, and Evening Primrose Oil have all been touted as a solution to symptoms. Most of the supplements do not have strong evidence to suggest that they are effective, and some, such as Dong Quai and Evening Primrose, should not be used if you also take blood thinners. Speak with one of our providers today if you are interested in these supplements, or if you've tried them and continue to experience symptoms.
To screen for osteoporosis, a bone density test of the hip and spine is recommended. DEXA stands for dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Healthcare providers measure bone density in the hip and spine for several reasons. First, people with osteoporosis have a greater chance of fracturing these bones. Second, broken bones in the hip and spine can cause more serious problems, including longer recovery time, greater pain and even disability. Bone density in the hip and spine can also predict the likelihood of future breaks in other bones.
