It's hard to believe, but... we are getting ready for the upcoming winter season! Trucks are getting tuned up for snow and ice removal and planning is well underway. We saw temperatures get close to that dreaded 32 degrees earlier this week, but somehow, someway, summer weather returning is giving us hope that late winter is in store for us. Either way, we are always ready 💪
A lot is happening at our Grass Lake and Millburn Road resurfacing project! We are close to finishing the culvert replacement on Main St., which has been closed since Sept. 14. Main St. could reopen as soon as this week, as a majority of the new culvert work has been completed that allows us to safely reopen Main St. to traffic. Due to a conflict with an unknown gas main, work on the culvert should resume later this fall (weather dependent) after a new gas line is run on the west side of Main St. This work can be done under traffic using daily lane closures. The culvert repair on Millburn Road is complete. Surface paving is occurring on Millburn Road this week. Grading work is underway on Grass Lake Road where gaps in the sidewalk and bike path exist. Crews have begun pouring new sidewalk in front of Lakes High School. The installation of retaining walls and grading work will continue.
IL 83 (Ivanhoe Road) to Close at Rail Crossing in Grayslake The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that repairs to the Metra Milwaukee District North Line crossing on IL 83 south of IL 137 (Buckley Road) in Grayslake will require a full closure starting at 6 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. A detour will direct motorists to Peterson Road, Midlothian Road and Buckley Road. The work is expected to be complete by 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. https://go.usa.gov/xGMuC
Jackson St in North Chicago to Close for 4 Weeks Starting Oct. 13 In coordination with the City of North Chicago, we will be closing Jackson St. to through traffic one block north and one block south of 14th St. beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 6 am. The road will be closed for four weeks. This closure is necessary to complete pavement reconstruction prior to the winter season. DETOUR ROUTE: From the north, 13th St. to Lincoln St. to 15th St.. From the south, 15th St. to Victoria Ave. to 13th St. PROJECT INFO: This work is part of LCDOT’s 14th St. reconstruction project. For more information, visit http://www.14thstproject.com/
Wadsworth Road east of Delany Road to close on Oct. 6 The Union Pacific Railroad informed the Lake County Division of Transportation that it will be closing the railroad crossing on Wadsworth Road, east of Delany Road, for emergency repairs. The closure of the crossing will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, and is scheduled to reopen by 5 p.m. the same day. Detour Route: The signed detour route for this road closure will be Delany Road, to York House Road, to IL 131 (Green Bay Road). Local traffic will be allowed on Wadsworth Road from Delany Road to the railroad crossing and from IL 131 (Green Bay Road) to the railroad crossing. The railroad crossing will be closed to all traffic.
I don't know about you, but climbing a water tower sounds pretty scary! Last week, our GIS team flew a drone over the Grandwood Park tower to check on some of our Lake County PASSAGE equipment. Lake County uses several water towers throughout Lake County to communicate to traffic signals and roundabouts. Now instead of climbing water towers, we can use a drone to check on equipment in just a few minutes.
Update: Grass Lake and Millburn Road Resurfacing Work is progressing nicely on our project to resurface Grass Lake Road and Millburn Road. The new non-motorized multi-use path is now paved that connects the area to Hastings Lake Forest Preserve and locations west to Lakes Community High School. The contractor has poured the new sidewalk and curb at many locations. New sidewalk ramps at all pedestrian crossings have been installed. Crews are scheduled to finish installing retaining walls along Grass Lake Road, Millburn Road, and Main St. by the end of next week. Pavement striping on Millburn Road has begun. Efforts are underway to prepare the project for the winter snow and ice season. Grass Lake Road and the south section of Main St. are scheduled to be resurfaced in the spring of 2021. Do you remember!? Last year on Halloween we saw the scariest, creepiest, most terrifying thing ever. It wasn't a ghoul, ghost, or goblin... it was the SNOWIEST Halloween on record! We couldn't believe that we had a FULL snow crew on the roads in OCTOBER. 😱 Tomorrow's forecast looks promising. 54 and sunny. We like that a lot more 🌞
Illinois Department of Transportation Project: Barrington Road Resurfacing Begins Wednesday IDOT is beginning a project to resurface Barrington Road from US 12 to Liberty Street in Wauconda. The project will require daily, intermittent lane closures. As part of the work, IDOT is also constructing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and replacing deteriorated curbs. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2021. More info: https://go.usa.gov/x7TWB

Update: The road is now open. ********** ROAD CLOSED: Grand Ave east of Lewis Ave in Waukegan is closed due to a crash. Seek an alternate route.
Our most frequently asked question is - which roads do you plow? The lines in blue are the LCDOT snow plow routes. LCDOT plows Lake County highways, the ones marked with the 5-sided blue and gold route markers such as Butterfield Road, Washington Street, and Buffalo Grove Road. We do NOT plow state routes like IL Route 120 or IL Route 60. State routes are maintained by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
Wow, have things changed since our friends at the US National Weather Service Chicago Illinois posted this image in late December! Nine snow callouts and a few winter storms later, it sure seems like snow season is officially here. Compared to last year, snowfall and salt usage are way down. It will be interesting to see if Lake County sees an uptick of winter weather headed into spring. We hope there isn't, but we will be ready. Just no blizzards please :)
A full crew hit the roads earlier this morning. A sloppy wintry mix full of snow, sleet and freezing rain is moving through Lake County. The combination of snow, ice and blustery winds can lead to difficult travel conditions. Today is a good day to stay home if you are able to. We just made a shift change. A full crew is back on the roads. The goal is to clear slush and clean up before temperatures drop tonight.
Crews worked through the night to clear snow-covered roads and respond to the icy mix the area has been seeing for the past several hours. Roads are slushy right now so it's important for everyone to still drive with caution, especially on turn lanes. There aren't many accidents to report right now, but that could change once the morning commute picks up. Please drive carefully, and give our snow plow drivers plenty of room. #DontCrowdThePlow
Crews were out at Fairfield Road south of 176 today to address visibility issues along the road. This means we (I bet you guessed it) moved more snow. Stay warm, everyone!
We live in a snowy, frozen and super cold world. Our crews were out in North Chicago today making room for (you guessed it) more snow. It's ridiculously cold, meaning the snow isn't melting anytime soon. 🥶

Looking good, Nate! Nate was out earlier today knocking back snow on Kilbourne Road. We made a shift change at 11 am to continue cleanup. High winds are continuing to blow snow. Please continue to drive carefully, especially near open areas.
Clean up operations are continuing this morning as we made a full shift change late last night. Winds are still gusting up to 30 mph which can lead to blowing snow, especially in open areas. Please drive carefully and give plows plenty of room to work. https://lakecountypassage.com/
Take. It. Slow! Numerous accidents have been reported countywide due to the weather. Please be careful if you need to drive tonight. Visit lakecountypassage.com for the latest road conditions.
