Bed bugs will die when exposed to heat over 112 degree. We all have watched the local weather people on how hot it gets in a car during the summer. The recent 90-95 degree days should have heated the car enough to kill any active bed bugs.

According to a San Francisco State University study, an 80 degree day will create a interior car temp of 125 degrees after an hour. 85 degrees creates a temperature of 130 degrees. Bed bugs die after and hour at a temperature of 113 degrees. They die after 1 minute exposed to temperatures of 130 or greater.

Bed bugs are a nuisance. They are not considered harmful, but new research shows they may transmit some diseases. The likelihood they will be much more than a nuisance is low. Keep in mind that traditional bed bug treatments may require a second visit by the exterminator and a repeat application.
If my home was infested I would rather spend my time before a treatment setting myself up for success by de-cluttering the affected areas (especially in closets and under beds) and removing any heat-sensitive items like candles, wines, or chocolates.
Clean up the clutter
Bed bugs hide in so many places, you don’t need to provide any more for them. The greatest issue concerning bed bug heat treatments is clutter. Clutter acts as an insulator when using heat. Get rid of the clutter, reduce your treatment times, increase the efficacy of heat treatments.
When using a chemical treatment, make sure you keep the clutter down to minimum after the treatment. Piles of dirty clothes are a safe haven for bed bugs.

When you spray the DIY products you expose the bed bugs to the poison. The problem is they start to build a resistance to the chemical.
