About

Frank Akers II, OD, has been providing expert eye care to residents of Mesa, Arizona, and the surrounding area for almost 20 years. As an optometrist at Akers Eyecare Center, he's passionate about providing high-quality care to all of his patients.
He received his undergraduate degree from Northern Arizona University and then moved to Chicago where he attained the highest level of training from the Illinois College of Optometry. He received honors in his clinical rotations that included primary care, low vision, advanced contact lenses, and pediatrics.
Dr. Akers served as the staff optometrist at Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago for a year, and while there, he continued to hone his knowledge of ocular diseases, including diabetes, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
In 2000, he returned to Arizona where he accepted a position at the Rinehart Eyecare Center to improve his skills in advanced contact lens fitting by working with renowned contact lens practitioner, Dr. John Rinehart. Dr. Akers opened his practice, Akers Eyecare Center, in 2001.
Dr. Akers is on the board of the Arizona Optometric Association and also co-chairs the Bronstein Cornea and Contact Lens Seminar, an annual meeting designed to educate eye care professionals in contact lenses and the health of the eye.

Akers Eyecare Center takes the safety and health of our patients and staff extremely seriously. One of our Staff Members had an encounter with an individual who later tested for positive for Corona Virus 19(CV-19). Our policy is once any member of our team has known contact with a CV-19 patient, they are to inform management and immediately quarantine. The employee has been in quarantine, but to confirm the safety of our patients and staff we will be closing the office June 19, 2020 and will not reopen until staff members have passed a CV-19 Test. The office has gone through thorough cleaning and sterilization process. We apologize for this inconvenience, but we always emphasize safety. Dr. Akers will be available via telehealth if any emergencies arise. If an in-office appointment is needed, he will assist you with a referral to an appropriate eye care provider.

Due to unforeseen circumstances regarding COVID-19, we have been required by the CDC to limit our schedule to one patient per hour. Unfortunately, for the remaining month of May and the month of June we will be removing all pre appointments scheduled from last year to accommodate our new scheduling protocol. You may still call the office and schedule an appointment if it is time for your annual exam. We appreciate your patience as we work together to navigate this difficult time. Our highest priority is the health and welfare of our patients and their families, as well as our valued staff. Thank you for your understanding and loyalty. We sincerely appreciate the trust you give us for your eye care needs.

Experts don’t know why we close our eyes when sneezing but they’ve got a theory! When we sneeze, it’s a forceful, germ-filled burst of particles and microorganisms bursting from our nose and mouth when something irritates the mucous membranes of our nose or throat. Experts believe we close them to protect our eyes from particles entering while they’re exiting our nose and mouth!
