Plenty of Utahns will find themselves spending a lot of time at home over the next few weeks as the COVID-19 pandemic plays out.
Why not use this as an opportunity to spend some quality time with your lawn?
Here are five lawn care tips to keep you busy during the coronavirus outbreak:
1 - Fill in the blanks (with seed or sod)
Don’t leave bare patches in the lawn unattended because weeds will find them. Fill in bare spots with grass seed or with a sod patch from All American Sod.
Cut the patch to fit and press it firmly into the soil and get the water coming. Your sod should be kept moist, but not soggy. Which brings us to the next topic.
2 - Water the right way
The best time to water your lawn is when it needs it. At the beginning of the season, you don’t have to rush. When the grass starts growing, it’s the roots that grow first. If the ground is a little dry, they grow deep into the soil. These deep roots help the grass survive drought. So holding off on watering at first is actually good for your grass.
However, if you walk across the lawn and the blades of grass do not spring back in your footsteps, it’s time to water.
3 - Keep weeds under control
It only takes a few minutes to clean out dandelions or pull chickweed from the lawn. An organic herbicide can also be handy. Use the recommended organic herbicide only in the areas where weeds are a problem. Make sure to follow label directions as more is not always better.
Weeds compete with grass so pull them in spring before they spread or go to seed. This will eliminate the competition and help get your lawn off to a good start
4 - Clean up
Walk over your lawn and gather any twigs, branches or other debris that has appeared over winter. Dispose of trash, and add small twigs and leaves to your compost pile. Then, rake out dead grass. It can also go on the compost pile unless it contains weeds.
Once you've picked up this debris and disposed of it properly, you're ready to mow.
5 - Mow high
The rule of thumb for mowing is to remove only one-third of the total grass blade length at a time.
Setting your mower to the highest possible setting for your grass type allows the blades to grow thick and develop a deep root system. This method also crowds out weeds, putting you well on your way to cultivating the most enviable backyard on the block.

We have exciting news! Our Richfield farm has officially recovered from the flood! We are now cutting our American Blue and Turf Type Tall Fescue grasses. The American Blue is our Kentucky Blue grass grown in Richfield and our highest quality sod. It is the perfect sod for your home, business or landscape. Our Fescue is more drought tolerant, and good for sports fields and high traffic areas. Both are grown in our Southern Utah Super Soil which is high in iron and other minerals giving the sod its beautiful dark green color. Both are priced at .50 a square foot. We will also continue to sell our Miracle Blue type, which is Kentucky Blue grass grown at our Goshen location. It has been reduced to .47 a square foot. Give us a call at 801-227-7800 for pricing and options. We look forward to working with you!
