There has already been evidence of influenza in west Alabama. The real onset of the flu season tends to be just after Thanksgiving. I would strongly urge you to get a flu shot by December to protect yourself as much as possible. There are special vaccines for children under 3 and for seniors. Unfortunately, the nasal flu vaccine offered in recent years proved to be less effective than the injected form and is no longer offered. However, for those who do not like injections, there is an intradermal flu shot which goes under the skin like an allergy shot and not in the muscle. This is considerably less painful and offered for adults (not approved under the age of 18) at the Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center as well as other locations throughout the area. SGH
This Fall has been a significant challenge for allergy and asthma sufferers. It is not just your imagination.
Rain has the effect of clearing pollen from the air (temporarily) and washing it into the soil. This year's lack of rain means that the pollen has simply accumulated over weeks and weeks. That which has settled to the earth is easily blown into the air by a gentle breeze. The upshot is more in your nose and lungs and more chances to react.
Those of you on shots should be feeling fairly good as this is the sort of situation where shots usually help a great deal.
For the rest of you, hang in there. Let us know if you are having problems as there is almost always some way to minimize symptoms. SGH
