This was written by a colleague of mine and it hit direct to the point for what’s going on right now , we try to accommodate every inquiry and job as much as possible but unfortunately in this day and age work climate it’s almost impossible to accommodate everyone so please be considerate and patient , we value every single one of our past, current and potential clients!!!
Let’s address communication issues.
Firstly, let’s all take a moment to understand that we are STILL in a pandemic. Through this pandemic, lots and lots of people being home, and having time to jump into construction projects has lead to a HUGE influx of jobs.
Contractors of all types are slammed. And I mean slammed. We’re also contending with a shortage of materials, material delays, and materials going up in cost daily.
We have children that are not in school. We have family members that are sick. We’ve become ill ourselves...
We are humans too. Lots of us are small companies and through Facebook & multiple groups for contractors, has put us neck and neck with LARGE companies. Companies that have the staffing, assistants, phone personal, etc. to handle questions every.single.day. Most of us smaller companies do it all: bids, phones, e-mail, clients, AND we are working on the job site. AND we have families AND our own homes need attention AND we need to eat & sleep.
Many of us small companies have hired staffing to assist us with the day to day questions. Many have not but have come to realize it’s a necessity. We’re all growing at an incredibly fast pace and with this pace, comes growing pains. But understand, training someone to run your business is very time consuming and many contractors don’t have time for that right now.
We have to deal with everything you all deal with AND our companies. I’m sure every single person out there can relate in some form or another. I think everyone could exhibit some grace & understanding through these incredibly tough times.
If you’re not receiving the kind of attention you need, I suggest you look elsewhere- and I don’t mean that in a nasty way- but let’s be real here. I’m very tired of seeing so many amazing small businesses get thrown under the bus because their communication is lacking. I suggest having a conversation with a contractor about expectations for communication prior to even setting up a bid.
Contractors, might I suggest giving people approximate soft bids (not to be held to) prior to visiting a home or business. I know this is hard in some instances but even saying, “that will be around $20k” could potentially weed people out. Many people are shopping right now with their ideas, ideas that may never come to fruition but cost us valuable time with the home visits, drafting estimates, and question answering.
Please also allow contractors (unless they’ve stated otherwise) their weekends, holiday weekends, etc. Don’t message someone Friday night and be pissed because you didn’t hear from them until Tuesday evening. Let’s set realistic expectations here.
A lot of us contractions have received negative reviews on our business pages about poor communication. That’s a total gut punch. I, personally, had a 5 star rating for 6 years and now it’s lowered for “poor communication”. So do us a favor, and leave your contractors some positive reviews. We’re running on fumes here and something positive like a “thank you and job well done” refuels us and brings smiles to our faces.
So, in conclusion, please, please show some grace. And that goes both ways. We’re all maxed out. All of us.
