Beginning Monday, October 12, 2020, residents and businesses can pick up free mulch at Maui EKO Systems located at the Central Maui Landfill. This will continue while supplies last.
Green waste mulch helps soil retain moisture, reduces erosion and encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi to create nutrient rich soil.
Mulch can be picked up Monday through Saturday between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Vehicles must be pickup truck size or larger. Heavy machinery will be used to fill the vehicles.
When entering the Central Maui Landfill, follow the signs for “Green Waste.” On weekdays, check in at the EKO office for a loading ticket. On Saturdays, check in with the EKO monitor stationed at the green waste drop off area.
Residents and businesses can also arrange for a delivery of mulch. To schedule a delivery, or for more information, contact Maui EKO Systems at (808) 572-8844.

Whale Alert! Whale Alert! Instant mood lifter! Our friend and photographer Jason Moore (Jason Maui ) just shared a photo (taken approx 910 am) of what we believe to be Maui's (and Hawaii's) first whale sighting. He was aboard a Trilogy catamaran. Looks like the sighting began around 8:30 am. Woop Woop!
His words "First whale of the season🎈🎉🎯!!!"
Interestingly enough, it's the same day as last year's first sighting on Maui 10/8 by Makai Adventures.

The banyan tree in Lahaina, in Maui, Hawaii, United States, was planted on April 24, 1873, in Lahaina to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of first American Protestant mission. The banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) known in Hawaiian as paniana, located in the Courthouse Square, which was renamed Banyan Tree Park covering 1.94 acres, is not only the largest in the state but also in the United States.
The tree was a gift from missionaries in India. A mere 8 feet (2.4 m) when planted, it has grown to a height of about 60 feet (18 m) and has rooted into 16 major trunks, apart from the main trunk, with the canopy spread over an area of about 0.66 acres (0.27 ha).

This image is a composite of 6 photos I took on December 13th while viewing the Geminid Meteor Shower near midnight. I read the shower was called the Geminids because it appeared the meteors originated from that constellation. Well, except for a couple strays, they all seem to be heading from and going to the same direction! Thanks to Dan Brandes for the company. We enjoy freezing together 😉 Mike Neal says sleep is overrated, but the pandemic has allowed me to catch up and now I’m used to it.
I don’t know which is more mesmerizing for me, the countless meteors streaking across the night sky, or the tidal wave of clouds splashing through the crater. There are airplanes and satellites adding to the movement, and over 30 meteors in the short video. With the video, you can pause it or drag the slider to count the meteors. The County of Maui Department of Water Supply is asking customers in West Maui and Upcountry to conserve water use for the next 24 to 48 hours because of power outages and the ongoing Olowalu brush fire.
Due to power outages and the fire, the Lahaina Water Treatment Plant has been closed, the department reported Saturday night.
The department asks West Maui and Upcountry residents to limit water consumption to necessary uses only, such as food preparation and bathing.
The department apologizes for any inconvenience. For emergency updates, call 270-7633.

County officials say the new 30 percent occupancy limit for all retail business can be determined by taking the total interior footage, dividing it by 36 square feet (that's a six foot buffer per person), and multiplying that by 30 percent.

I’m not sure how I made it to the top of Haleakala on the morning after our first winter storm. Sunrise tickets are nearly impossible for me to get since the available tickets are posted when I’m out hiking and away from my computer. I arrived early and the visibility was…zero. Read a book in the truck a few minutes then got out and walked around while waiting for first light.
I was surprised to be able to see Mauna Hanakauhi across the crater floor, and intermittently several of the Big Island peaks were visible. There was a tiny bit of color so I told my camera to pretend it was cloudy…it was, and that warmed the scene up enough. This is a long exposure of 13 seconds, done intentionally to bring out the colors.
Shortly later, the foggy clouds returned and so did I.

PI'ILANI HIGHWAY (back road to Hana): Word from Kaupo side - river is running at Nuanualoa Bridge. Not safe and more than likely, there may be other bigger and more dangerous rivers that are running. Vehicles are having issues driving through, and very iffy crossing. This means your vehicle can be swept away if it is running hard or your vehicle is light.
Please do not drive through the backside today, for your own safety. Please drive with caution if going to Hana today, and be aware of falling trees, landslide/mudslide conditions, flash flooding if it is raining in the mountains. Please be safe and if not sure, seek advice from authorities or people who live in the area.

Sunset above the clouds from the top of one of the world's largest mountains if you measure from it's base below sea level which is about 30,000 feet below the summit and about 20,000 feet deep in the Pacific Ocean. Haleakala means house of the sun in the Hawaiian language and it definitely is a spectacular place to view a sunrise or sunset. This was a bit after the sun set and the rays were being cast up onto the sky by the sun below the horizon. While the sky wasn't this dark by eye, it was still pretty striking because at 10,000 feet above sea level the sky can get quite dark in the evenings and at night. Hope you enjoy! And Aloha! :)

The public is urged not to travel to the park. The entrance gate is closed and they will not be able to see ice or snow in the park as the road is closed. Park rangers advise that the road conditions may worsen through the evening.

HAPPY FAT TUESDAY: Malasada Day, which dates back to the days of the sugarcane plantations of the 19th century, the resident Catholic Portuguese (mostly from Madeira and the Azores) workers used up butter and sugar prior to Lent by making large batches of malasadas.
In 1878, Portuguese laborers from Madeira and the Azores came to Hawaii to work in the plantations. These immigrants brought their traditional foods with them, including a fried dough pastry called the "malasada."
Today there are numerous bakeries in the Hawaiian islands specializing in malasadas.

The Maui Sunflowers by @pacificbiodiesel are blooming again. What a joy to look at! In April 2017, I shared a video of the first sunflower blooms on Maui which I captioned the “dancing sunflowers” because they look like they were dancing with the wind. It caught wind and a magical thing happened - it was shared all over the world! Guess how many people has been reached by the video? Current count is 11 Million!
