Our Mission - For the past 12 years I served as the owner and Licensed Practical Nurse of an Outpatient Opioid Treatment Center. For those who may not be familiar with what that is; we were a treatment program for people who became addicted to prescription opioids (pain killers) and heroin.
As one can imagine there are a lot of stigmas attached to addiction as well as a lot of feelings and opinions associated with it, Those years of my life changed me in ways that simply cannot be put into words. I met and worked with some amazing people and I learned so much about people, about society, but mostly I learned about PAIN.
Pain is real. Pain can happen to anyone of us and at any given time. People having to take opioids regularly for a period of approximately 3 weeks or longer can develop a physical dependence. physical dependence without proper medical care and education can, and quite often does, develop into addiction. In 2016 alone, Opioid overdose accounted for more than 42,000 deaths (HHS.Gov)
During the last 12 years I learned that a large percentage of people entering treatment developed their addiction after being treated for a legitimate medical condition. I also learned that a lot of these patient had medical conditions which were chronic or they were unable to afford the medical treatment needed to resolve their condition. This fact alone makes relapse rates for those entering treatment programs staggering.
