Climate-Wise Landscaping

Stop the madness! Seasonal plantings usually consist of non-native annuals, which asre planted in full bloom (at the end of their lifecycles). When they fade or die in a month or two, they are ripped out and replaced with another set of plants. This cycle is repeated several times each year. What a waste!
Besides wasting money and effort, this endless cycle is bad for the planet.
- Each time the plants are replaced, the soil is disrupted, which releases CO2, a greenhouse gas.
- The growing, transporting, and installing of these plants has a large carbon footprint and it also uses a lot of extra water over a more permanent arrangement such as native perennials.
- Most of these plants are non-native and do not support our birds and pollinators. In addition, many of these seasonal plants are treated with systemic insecticides to make it easier to grow them. But those poisons will kill all pollinators and all larval stages of insects that feed on these plants. The birds will have much less to feed upon and many are already struggling in the face of climate change.
