Alzheimer s Day Services of Memphis, Inc., (ADS) is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) dementia-specific adult day program that provides personal care services and organized, therapeutic activities for persons with Alzheimer s disease and other related dementias (stroke, Parkinson s, etc.). The service that ADS provides is two-fold: to the participant, the one with the diagnosis of dementia, and to his/her family that is also devastated by the disease. ADS offers an innovative, thoughtfully designed therapeutic activity day program that can prevent, divert or delay the need for institutionalized care and its associated financial and emotional costs. ADS began in 1983 in borrowed facilities at Lewis Senior Citizen s Center at 1188 North Parkway, two days a week with just enough space to help a handful of those afflicted with Alzheimer s disease. Today, ADS is the still the only free-standing dementia specific adult day program in Shelby County and serving the Mid-South with two centers: Grashot Center 4585 Raleigh LaGrange Road (inside Kennedy Park) Dorothy s Place 3185 Hickory Hill Road (corner of Knight Arnold and Hickory Hill beside the Walgreens). It costs ADS over $89 per person per day but only asks most families to pay on a sliding scale with a minimum of $32 per day. ADS is also a provider through CHOICES, Aging Commission of the Mid-South and the VA. With four internal scholarships ADS has not turned anyone away because of finances. Both centers are open five days a week, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Go to www.adsmemphis.org or call 901-372-4585 to learn more about this program or start the application process.Stop by for a visit!
