About

In 2002 a group of dedicated parents submitted a charter school application for a new school, American Preparatory Academy. The model was based off of a highly successful school in Colorado – Cheyenne Mountain Charter Academy. The school focus was rigorous academics and virtuous character development, utilizing small achievement-level groupings in elementary school – all in an environment of fun and enthusiasm. The application was approved and the first Draper school was born.

The school opened at capacity, with a long waiting list. Parents, students, and teachers shared a common vision and created a school where students were challenged academically, and were given the leadership skills they would need to “change the world for the better”. Over the years our scores continued to climb and wait lists continued to grow.

We wanted to help more children and families so in 2009, The School for New Americans, serving many immigrant and refugee children, opened in West Valley City to serve 570 students. Our new campus was quickly filled with students eager to learn and who responded quickly to the masterful instruction of our teachers and the challenging curriculum the school provides. The waiting lists demanded another West Valley school, to include a high school so students in West Valley could enter in kindergarten and complete their entire K-12 education at an American Prep school.

In December, the D3 choirs combined to sing a lovely "Winter Lullaby." In true covid-fashion, the students were spread out (and only removed masks to record the video) and we had no audience. We made it as special as we could with hand-made snowflakes, festive attire, and special lighting. Enjoy! APA Accreditation Renewed American Prep recently completed our 5-year Accreditation review and received high marks! Accreditation is a very rigorous process and is required for public schools by Utah state law. American Prep was evaluated against 32 Performance Standards by an outside 5-member team of experienced educators from Cognia, the accrediting agency. The Cognia Review Team conducted 117 interviews of our teachers, students, parents, administrators, and board members, visited classrooms, and reviewed over 400 documents. We are excited to announce that American Prep received a very high accreditation score of 350.31 points! Cognia reports that the average score for the schools they accredit is 280. We were excited to score far above the average, which indicates that our organization demonstrates powerful practices that align with our school mission. We value the process of accreditation and wish to thank the Cognia Review Team for their effort and commitment to evaluating our organization. We also want to express our gratitude to the many American Prep parents, students, community partners, team members, our Governing Board, and our American Prep Leadership who all painstakingly gathered documents and resources for the review process, participated in interviews and classroom observations, and who make our school so excellent! https://hubs.ly/H0CL-XX0 #apa @americanprep Utah Association of Public Charter Schools #charterschool #schoolchoice BLOG.AMERICANPREP.ORG APA Passes Accreditation
