Now and then, Abby has overcome significant challenges since she left our Heart Center nearly 4 years ago. Diagnosed with a condition called cardiomyopathy, Abby had open-heart surgery to place a ventricular assist device (VAD) that helps her heart pump blood throughout her body. Our team taught her about how the VAD device works and the importance it plays in keeping her healthy. Abby says she wouldn't trade her experience for anything. She wants to become a transplant coordinator when she's older to use her experiences to support other kids through similar journeys like hers. Our patient Georgie is giving us #MondayMotivation as we kick off #HeartMonth! Before he was born, our FETAL Center identified and worked with Georgie's mom on a treatment plan for his single ventricle heart defect. At just 4 days old, Georgie had his first open-heart surgery. He got to go home after two months in our care with the help of our Safe at Home program. Georgie's mom keeps in touch with his care team every day through this program to report his heart rate and blood pressure. Now 5 years old, Georgie celebrates the dates of his procedures as his "heartaversaries."
