Shawnee Fire Recognizes Fire Prevention Week
City of Shawnee, KS Government
September 28 at 3:20 PM ·
National Fire Prevention Week runs from Sunday, October 4 to Saturday, October 10. At tonight's City Council meeting, Mayor Michelle Distler will read a proclamation recognizing Fire Prevention Week.
Normally, our Shawnee Fire Department firefighters spend the week visiting classrooms throughout Shawnee to teach kids about the importance of fire safety. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to adjust those plans, so our firefighters put together a video that we hope you all take the time to show your kids.
We hope you enjoy it!

This plaque is hanging in the south entrance of our funeral home. I am proud that my family’s business has been in this location 75 years, as of May 2021. Owning and operating our business, while serving this community, was and still is important to all four of us. (Edward Paul Amos, Eugene Paul Amos, Gregg Edward Amos and Gregg Parker Amos.) We look forward to the next 75 years.

For Thanksgiving, here is a poem to share with you, from a grief specialist and friend of the funeral home, Darcie Sims:
We are proud to be celebrating 75 years of serving the Kansas City community in May 2021.
Nora McInerny is an author, podcast creator, social entrepreneur, and speaker on a topic that most people feel uncomfortable talking about: grief. In this clip from a Ted Talk from November 2018, Nora talks about her own experience during a traumatic time in her life and how she hasn't "moved on," but has worked on moving forward.

"A grieving person is going to laugh again and smile again. Yes, they're going to move forward. But that doesn't mean that they've moved on."

"People think that completing a set of stages or tasks, or just letting time pass in general, will lead to closure in grief. However, this is a misconception, and I’m sorry to say, this isn’t how grief works at all."
This video and article is about the term "Closure" and how it is often improperly used with discussions on the loss of a loved one.

Welcome to Throwback Thursday! In honor of our upcoming 75th Anniversary, we'd like to share some of our history with you.
Newspapers were one of the main sources of advertising in the past. Many of you will recognize our Past-President Gregg Amos in this ad about our business being a very personal one.
While this ad is just a *few* years old, the message still runs true today. We still do many personal services, such as going on our own removals, doing our own embalmings and cremations, and counseling families and holding services.
We are so fortunate to have been serving the Kansas City area for four generations and almost 75 years.
Have you seen our new website yet? Please check it out! Now you can conveniently order flowers directly from the site for your loved one's funeral service, and leave photos and messages on the Tribute Wall of obituaries. Our entire Service and Price Guide is available to you directly online as well!
