On your way to a full recovery! We couldn't be happier for Gary to be heading to rehab after 7 weeks on a ventilator in our ICU. Dr Rubano, it's physicians like you that make these miracles possible! Congratulations Gary!

Go, Gary! 😍
Almost two weeks ago this #LongIsland veteran was discharged, and is thankfully on the road to recovery after being placed on a ventilator for 7 weeks due to the coronavirus.
When he couldn't see his family, our heroes became is support system. “The nursing staff and doctors we're like longtime friends,” he said. “I can't even begin to explain what it was like to have them by my side.”
Gary is now in rehab where he hopes to regain motion in arms lost while on the ventilator. His goal after recovery, to be able to serve another 5 years in the Army Reserve and retire after 20 years of service.
Thank you Gary, for sharing your story. And thanks to Jerry Rubano, MD, Trauma/Acute Care/Surgical Critical Care in the Department of Surgery at Stony Brook Medicine - who cared for him during most of his stay - along with many of our frontline heroes.

Another success story!
“Dr. Deborah Nagle is an amazing colorectal surgeon. I am writing this because I feel great after only 4 weeks of robotic colorectal surgery. Dr Nagle is a savior, after a bowel perforation, caused from pain meds from a broken hip due to a fall. We had no choice but to do a colostomy. Dr. Nagle assured me that in 3 months she would be able to reverse it. As an 81 year old, I had my doubts but with Dr. Nagel and my daughter’s positive attitude I stayed strong and healed. Sure enough we started the process of testing and scans to be sure I was ready for the reversal. Just as she had promised within the time frame, Dr. Nagle performed the reversal surgery robotically. It was a great experience, less invasive than the incision like I previously had. I was up and walking within 24 hours. Had no swelling and very little pain. Thanks to Dr. Nagle and her team I was able to return to my old self very quickly.”

After noticing a significant increase in D-dimer levels for hospitalized COVID-19 patients who suffered worse outcomes, Dr. Tassiopoulos and Stony Brook's Vascular and ICU COVID-19 team developed an aggressive approach to prevent thrombus formation using anticoagulation therapies last March. Today, this protocol is the hospital-wide best practice in care for treating escalating COVID-19 patients. The result has been shorter stays in both the ICU and hospital and faster recoveries.
Congratulations Dr. Tassiopoulos for this well-deserved recognition! To learn more about the Stony Brook Vascular Center visit:
