Too often patients with chronic or serious conditions move from one healthcare setting to the next and experience frequent changes to their care plan, medication regimen, or treatments and miss out on sufficient communication to manage their own care at home. “My mother was so confused when she left the nursing home,” said the daughter of a patient. “She didn’t know what medications to take as she had so many at home, plus the ones from the nursing home.”
Angelic Transitional Care coordinates the continuity of care during the transfer from healthcare setting to home to avoid mishaps with medications and treatments, ensuring patients are home safely and understand how to care for themselves effectively. These services are time-limited and are focused on ensuring continuity of care, safety, and avoiding preventable re-hospitalization. For more information call toll-free 844-948-0645. #transitionalcare
Everyone can benefit from a professional massage from a therapist. However, there are times when a loved one can provide massage to help with pain, anxiety and stress. In this week’s Wellness Wednesday, Angelic Health’s Director of Complementary and Alternative Therapies Robin A .Cohen-Feehan, BA, LMT offers instruction on how you can do a massage for hands and feet.
Hands
Using your thumbs, massage the palms of the hands with circular strokes. Work your way up each finger, with a squeeze and release motion. Do not pull the fingers. If the skin on the top of the hand is gently stroke with fingertips.
Feet
Using your thumbs and fingers, massage the soles of the feet in an outward circular motion. This helps loosen up the connective tissue of the plantar surface (bottom of foot) which can tighten when people do not walk much.

Andrea Agresti Pascale of Washington Township enjoys entertaining, crafting, refurbishing furniture, the beach, scuba diving, meeting new people, and animals (especially dogs). But her main interest in life is her family. “They ALWAYS come first,” said the Registered Dental Hygienist. However, it was the negativity this year in the world that reminder her that life is short and unpredictable, and got her thinking of making a difference. “ I love helping others, bringing smiles to faces and giving comfort, peace, and love, “ she explained about why she decided to volunteer at this time. “ I wanted to be a part of something that I could do just that, so I decided to volunteer with Angelic Hospice.”
If you want to be like Andrea and make a difference for hospice patients, give us a call at 609-515-3041, or email volunteer@Angelic.health.

It’s Wellness Wednesday and today a tip about the use of Orange Oil in #Aromatherapy
Most of us love the fresh, clean scent of an orange, and it looks like that's for good reason too.
Orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil has a rich, fruity scent that lifts the spirit while providing a calming influence on the body, and brings peace and happiness to the mind.
Orange oil is used to relieve spasm, stimulate digestion, and relieve depression. Diffuse a couple of drops, or add a couple drops to unscented lotion. Do not apply the oil directly to your skin. And keep away from pets and children.#palliativewellness.

Thank you #Signarama of Toms River for our beautiful logo sign in our new office at 81 East Water Street in #TomsRiver. We are thrilled to serve this wonderful community.
Waleska Medina, of Woolwich Township, has been an Angelic Hospice Volunteer for almost two years. As a Lead Medical Assistant with North American Spine and Pain she knows the importance of connecting with patients and providing emotional support and has made time to visit hospice patients. "Working in the medical field, I know how important having the one to one with patients. I decided to become a volunteer so I would be able to take the time to listen to the amazing stories and journey our patients have. Also, to love, laugh, cry and pray."
In addition to her career and her volunteer work with Angelic Hospice, Waleska enjoys traveling, getting to know different cultures and swimming in the ocean.
Her visits are most welcomed and enjoyed by her hospice patients. She makes a difference in their lives with every visit. We are honored to have Waleska as a hospice volunteer. If you want to make a difference and like Waleska, give us a call at 609-515-3041, or email volunteer@angelic,health.

Sleep is essential. It helps our bodies and our mid to rejuvenate. Yet, for many sleep can be elusive. For this week's Wellness Wednesday, we offer a few sleep tips from Angelic Health Palliative Wellness Center
• Treat you bed as you sanctuary from the stresses of the day. Use your bed only so you positively associate it with sleeping. It’s not the place to do your bills, or even watch TV.
• Improve your diet. Increase fresh fruits/veggies. Decrease fried, spicy high fat foods, alcohol and soda, especially at bedtime.
• Exercise. As little as 10 minutes a day can improve sleep. By expending energy throughout the day, you will reduce stress and anxiety which contribute to sleep problems and restlessness.
• Turn off electronics at least 30 minutes before bed. Using electronic devices before bedtime can be physiologically and psychologically stimulating in ways that can adversely affect your sleep.
• Have a cup of relaxing herbal tea. Sit still and relax, allow yourself to get ready for a good night sleep.
• Try Lavender or Bergamot essential oil in a diffuser or a few drops mixed with unscented lotion. You can also place a tissue with a drop or two of oil near your pillow. Never apply oils directly on the skin.
• Keep a notepad next to your bed, if you wake up with thoughts that are you from sleep, just write it down and forget about them until the morning.

Getting your goat? The residents of Bayville Manor really came to enjoy their annual goat visits usually done through the local #4H. However this year COVID limited such activities for the group. Not wanting to disappoint the residents, Angelic Health hospice nurse Mie Lowe, and Chelsea Goodman, community liaison arranged for the goats to visit. This was very special to these residents as you can see. One woman reminisced about how her father raised goats and then started singing in her native German. It was a beautiful moment. #BayvilleManor, #oceancounty

This #Thanksgiving is going to be different for many. Perhaps less family and friends will gather around the table to enjoy the traditional turkey dinner. It has indeed been a challenging year, and some may ask, "what is there to be thankful for?" Yet during difficult times, we often learn the most about being thankful. We take so many things for granted. We often don't think about freedom, fellowship, health and happiness until they are gone. So this holiday season, more than ever before, let us be mindful and thankful for the blessings we have.
From all of us at Angelic Health, May your Thanksgiving be one of gratitude, peace, and love. #grateful, #blessed

We want to make you aware of a phone scam that has been impacting communities around the country. Scammers will "caller ID spoof" hospital phone numbers, where they use sophisticated technology to disguise their phone number as the hospital's number, and pose as a hospital representative. They may then ask for your personal information. If you are not a patient of the hospital, or aren't scheduled for any procedures, it is unlikely anyone from the hospital would be calling you. If you think you may have received a caller ID spoof call from a hospital, please follow these guidelines:
--Do not give out any of your personal information.
--Do not call any phone number they give you.
--If you are a patient of the hospital or health system, but uncertain why you received the call, ask for a name and hospital department and then look up the hospital number directly and call to verify.
To learn more about Caller ID Spoofing and file a complaint with the FCC, please visit https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id

According to the Angelic Health Palliative Wellness Center, it is also a great option for the elderly, or the sick who may have difficultly chewing and swallowing their food.

The week leading up to #Christmas has been a very busy time for Santa. In addition to his preparation for the holiday, he made special visits to Angelic Hospice patients. Over the course of two days, Santa (actually two Santas) traveled more than 350 miles throughout #SouthJersey and delivered over 30 gifts to help make the holiday special for Angelic patients and their families. Visiting and delivering gifts were Angelic Hospice Volunteer #Santa Jon Fleischman, of #Margate and Volunteer Coordinator Santa Ed Koltman, of #Philadelphia, and elf helpers volunteer Kathleen Guzzo, of #MullicaHill, and Volunteer Coordinator Kayla Montoro who organized the event. Special thanks to Angelic staff to became “angel shoppers” and donated the gifts.
Many thanks to the South Shore Stitchers Quilt Guild, who made 40 fidget blankets for our patients affected by #Alzheimer’s or #Dementia. Those diagnosed with this disease can become easily restless. The blanket provides a happy distraction or redirection.

If you have a friend or family member receiving hospice care, you may be uneasy about what you can do to help and support those facing their final journey.
There’s a well-intended, but odd piece of advice floating around out there that friends and neighbors of the dying should take on household chores like doing the laundry or cleaning out the refrigerator. This sounds like a most generous gesture that would be greatly appreciated. But never take on a task without asking.
“People who are dying often feel like they’ve already lost so much control over their lives,” explains Angelic Health’s Shalini Basu, hospice social worker. “Even with the best of intentions, someone coming into their home and cleaning, doing laundry or anything without their permission can feel like yet another loss for them. Yes, offer to help with chores and let them decide what needs to be done.” Call first to see if they are feeling up to having visitors that day, and schedule your visit at their convenience. Ask how you can be helpful. Dying is exhausting and many times help with chores is just want they want. But what is important to you to accomplish may not be their top priority. Listen to them.
If you have questions about hospice care call us anytime toll free at 844-948-0645. #hospice, #werebyyourside,
So you’re in your 60s. Your nest is empty, and your daily routine has changed. You have less energy, but more wrinkles and pounds, and you’re ready for bed before Jeopardy’s credits roll. So you start to wonder about getting older. Indeed, aging is loaded with physical and emotional landmines, including the fear of having enough money to retire, losing independence, or getting a serious illness. Aging gracefully isn't only about looks, but more about attitude. How you feel about yourself is what really matters, experts say. Reducing stress and enjoying life can help you live and age well. There are a few things that Angelic Health staff recommend you can to do to make the rest of your life better. Your mental health perhaps has the greatest influence on the rest of your body.
Accept your age. Studies have concluded that people with a positive attitude about aging live longer and may recover better from illness or disability. Embracing our aging by seeing it as a gift will help us to make the most of our lives.
Spend time with the people you love. Meaningful relationships with friends and family, and a strong social network improves mental and physical well-being and longevity. This is also true for those who have pets. Having a furry companion reduces stress, loneliness and has been linked to lower blood pressure and better moods.
Do what makes you happy. Making time for activities you enjoy is the fuel for happiness. Spend time in nature, pursue a new hobby, or revive an old one, volunteer — do whatever brings you joy.

Today is the beginning of a new year. It is safe to say that most of us are happy to see 2020 come to a close. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the world. We have learned to work from home, to learn from home, and to balance our lives from home. Some have gotten healthier and fitter, while others have given into eating out of boredom. We have learned new things… to cook, create art, music, indulge in self-improvement. We have also learned a lot about ourselves, and our strength to carry on even during the most difficult times.
In the past, technology has taken us from human contact, and ironically it has been through the very same technology that we have preserved this connection. Facetime visits, Zoom celebrations, and Microsoft Team meetings, have made it possible for us to stay connected, see one another and hear each other’s voices even while not together in person. At Angelic Health we enhanced our services to included YouTube presentations of music and pet therapies, spiritual support and celebration of faith. We’ve held bereavement support groups, and trained and educated volunteers and staff using remote video conferencing to fill the void brought about due to social distancing. Phone calls became lifelines for the lonely and quarantined. Volunteers and staff unable to visit patients leveraged technology to provide their support remotely. In the end, we found that we can do things differently, and in some cases do things even better.
While we hope that 2021 brings us better days, we have learned firsthand that “necessity is indeed the mother of invention,” and that we can “keep calm and carry on.” Wishing everyone a truly Happy “New” Year. #newyear, #2021
We offer some inspiration for your New Year To Do List. #byyourside

Angelic Hospice Certified Home Health Aide Tiffany Markey, enjoys bringing comfort to her patients and their family members, noting that she is inspired by the compassion of her coworkers.
17 years ago, Tiffany was a young mother who needed a job. At the urging of a friend she became a home health aide. “I never looked back, and all these years later I still have the same passion, compassion for the job, and have learned so much from hospice care.”
Originally from Texas, she and her family have been here for five years, making their home in Egg Harbor Township. When not caring for patients, the mother of three sons most enjoys summers and gardening. She is also an artist, painting mostly in acrylics.

In this unprecedented time of social distancing, grieving the death of a loved-one has become challenging. Paying respects, comforting loved ones and friends with the traditional viewing and funeral services while staying safe is all but impossible. Can we grieve, honor, and celebrate the lives of those who died without being closer than six feet apart? According to Chaplain Ken Jackson, a spiritual care counselor at Angelic Health Hospice and Palliative Care the answer is yes, if we open ourselves up to technology and creativity.
"Families who are not able to have funerals and cannot travel from state to state can mourn with one another by using social media and posting a tribute to their loved one," said Jackson, of Franklin Township who has been a pastor for nearly 40 years. "A minister or officiant can also post a video with words of consolation," he explained.
With the current situation many houses of worship have embraced technology and are video streaming their regular weekly services to the congregations, so they already have the technology in place to provide remote service.

Volunteers with Angelic Health Hospice recently participated in the first of monthly volunteer virtual project meeting, learning how to make origami stars. Angelic Hospice volunteer, Sadia Alam, helped lead our first month’s project. She taught everyone how to make Japanese Origami Lucky Stars. These stars are made to be a symbol of love and good luck. Eventually, we’re going to pair these stars with aromatherapy sachets as a gift for our patients and caregivers.

What does Heart Month and Black History Month have in common? Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the first African American cardiologist who performed the first successful open heart surgery in 1893. The operation was done without X-rays, antibiotics, surgical prep-work, or tools of modern surgery. Dr. Williams' skills placed him and Provident Hospital in Chicago at the fore-front of a medical milestone. His patient, James Cornish, survived, and was discharged from the hospital 51 days after his remarkable surgery.

Visit any grocery store after notice of weather emergency and you’ll usually find that the bread, milk and water isles empty out quickly. It is natural to want to be prepared to spend days unable to get out. However, for those with illnesses, especially those on hospice or palliative care services, the list of things to do and have on hand is much longer.
According to April Gall, RN, director of admissions at Angelic Health Palliative & Hospice Care it is best to prepare well in advance.
"We know that snow storms, hurricanes, and nor'easters are going to hit our area, so it is smart to do some advanced planning to avoid problems that are stressful," she said.
The following are 10 things you can do now to prepare in advance of a weather emergency.
1. If you are a hospice patient it is likely that staff will reach out to you when a storm or emergency is approaching. If you are living in a high-risk area hospice staff can arrange for a respite stay in a facility out of harm’s way. But this planning takes a few days, so it is best to make that decision early.
2. If you are on supplemental oxygen be sure to have a portable oxygen concentrator with a couple of extra batteries. You may also want to stay with someone who may have a generator, or arrange for respite at a care facility that has emergency power. Contact your electric company to inquire in advance about programs they have for those in need of oxygen.
3. Be sure to have a supply of medications. If you are a hospice patient be sure to communicate with your RN Case Manager who can be sure you have an adequate supply of medications and other care supplies. Be sure to have a cooler and freezer packs for medications that require refrigeration
4. Have a battery powered radio, flashlight and a cell phone. For summer outages have a battery-operated fan. Be sure to have extra fresh batteries and keep phone charged.
5. Lay in a supply of canned good and nonperishable food items, as well as liquid nutritional supplements such as Ensure, Boost etc...
6.Staying hydrated is very important year-round. You can become dehydrated any time of year. Summer is especially concerning if you lose power and air conditioning. It is particularly important to have plenty of water. Filling a bathtub is recommended. You may need sterile water to clean wounds so boil water prior to a storm coming and keep it in a sterile container.
7. Maintain a first aid kit with antiseptics like alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, band-aids, gauze, tape, and white vinegar to sterile nebulizers.
8. Be careful about using space heaters. Kerosene puts out toxic fumes which can be especially harmful to those who are ill. Also, be mindful of open flames near oxygen. It is recommended to say at least eight feet from a flame if you are on oxygen. Fire and O2 is a recipe for disaster.
9. Let others know your situation. Neighbors, friends, church groups, emergency services are great resources. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
10. Remember ABC… Always Be Calm. Staying calm allows you to think with a level head.
Preparing in advance of an emergency will give you more control over the situation. Thinking ahead allows time to prepare your particular needs list for that rainy, stormy, windy or snowy day. We are available toll free at 1-844-948-0645 to answer your questions if you or a loved one has a life-altering illness and have concerns about emergency preparedness.

Unlike other medical care, hospice focuses on treating symptoms, such as respiratory distress and pain, rather than trying to cure the illness itself. Hospice care provides patients with the best quality of life possible as the illness progresses. For heart and stroke patients, a hospice referral will come from the cardiologist or neurologist. A patient being referred to hospice care must meet several requirements, including:
• Having a life-limiting illness
• Progressive decline in status
• Continued weight loss
• Weakness and fatigue
• Other uncontrolled symptoms
According to the American Heart Association, for cardiac patients, additional symptoms may include recurrent congestive heart failure, an inability for the heart to adequately move blood out of its chambers, chest pain at rest, history of cardiac arrest and/or resuscitation, history of unexplained fainting due to loss of blood to the brain (syncope), and irregular heart rhythms that are resistant to therapy (arrhythmias). Stroke patients referred to hospice may have severe lack of consciousness or coma greater than three days duration, difficulty chewing or swallowing (dysphagia) leaving patient unable to eat enough to sustain life and post-stroke dementia.

Yet, this young woman from Piscataway finds time to give of herself to bring joy to Angelic Health Hospice patients. She uses her talents and interests in painting and drawing, knitting, baking, and photography to give to others. She also enjoys traveling, and is a big TV and movie aficionado.
"Being a hospice volunteer, to me, means putting a smile on a patient's face in even the smallest of ways, " says Shreya. And she certainly does that. #hospicevolunteer, #shareyourtalent, #makeadifferencetoahospicepatient

BIG SHOTS! Yep, the folks from Rittenberg Manor in #eggharborcity received their second COVID-19 Vaccine on Friday.
This seemingly impossible coordination was due to the diligence of Angelic Health's palliative care case manager Sandra Gomez, working collaboratively with #RittenbergManor, #AtlantiCare, and the #megasite in AC. Angelic Health provided the transportation for the group. Stay healthy!
