The first time we met Flower, a young, descented female skunk, we couldn't help but snuggle her! She was so sweet!
Skunks behave in a way that is similar to cats in that they enjoy being petted along the spine/at the base of the tail and communicate mostly through visual cues.
Sarah was more than happy to befriend this little girl and they became buddies π₯°π

Kovu's mom took him in as a semi-feral kitten and, although she was trying to earn his trust, she knew that Kovu needed to start veterinary care. Luckily, our Fear Free Pets methods and American Association of Feline Practitioners "Cat Friendly" approach had Kovu being a cautious but calm participant in his first vaccinations and FELV/FIV test. π₯°
Clara came in for her last "puppy vaccines" and received her final boosters and her Rabies vaccine! π
Today is World Rabies Day. Rabies is a fatal, incurable, zoonotic disease that affects the nervous system and is spread through saliva and/or blood. For more information on this disease, for which the vaccine is required by law in Iowa, please see the provided links!

Rabbits are adorable, soft, and such a joy to have... but they need more work than people realize. We encourage people to do their research before taking home this floppy-eared pet. Visit the website below for some information!

Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day. When you bring your pet in for any exam, the pet's BCS (Body Condition Score) is assessed. Why? Body Condition Score is assessed because it can be an important assessment of a pet's general health. If a dog/cat is overweight, your veterinarian will discuss the rammifications of that (e.g. diabetes). If underweight, your veterinarian will talk to you about concerns with recent changes in weight that might be indicators of underlying issues (e.g. endocrine imbalances). See the links below for more info!

Binx was found in someone's yard at about 3 weeks of age and needed a lot of TLC! Luckily, the folks that found him were serious about providing him the best care and brought him to us! Happy World Smile Day! If you cat/dog's smile looks like the "before" picture, you may *not* be! Dental disease is very common (27.8% visible in dogs, 41.7% visible in cats), and most people don't know how extensive it is in their pets. The "after" picture is just after cleaning! This dog ended up needing many dental extractions (a surgical removal of the tooth). Just because dental disease is common doesn't mean our pets should have to deal with it, so please call us with questions you may have!

Today is day four of Tech Week, which means that it's Alaura's day! This remarkable gal is so dedicated to our patients and clients, but when she's not here, she's spending time with her husband, two cats, and two dogs. Alaura is known for her go-to attitude, her kindness to animals and humans, and her want to learn whatever she can to serve your pets! Thank you, Alaura, for your great attitude, love for our patients, and for giving us your all!

Tech week day three! Today is Megan's day! Megan is an outstanding lady who, when not serving our patients, prefers to spend time relaxing at home or visiting family. Megan is known for her wry humor, attention to detail to make sure our patients are getting the best, and her ability to keep us laughing on rough days. Thank you, Megan, for giving your best to our patients, for dedicating yourself to helping each pet get exactly what they need, and for your fantastic work ethic!
Even though this week is officially known as "Tech Week," we wanted to use this last day to thank our *amazing* kennel staff! Just like our technicians, our kennel staff makes the world go 'round! If your pet has ever stayed overnight with us, whether a night or a week, our kennel staff is responsible for providing much of his/her after-hours care! The kennel staff also cleans the clinic to make sure we stay safe for our patients and our clients, and they do so for the love of animals. Thank you, kennel staff! π₯°
Day four of tech week is here! Today, we get to learn more about our newest addition, Cheyenne! This remarkable lady may be our newest addition, but she's already loving our patients and learning so much. When she's not learning the ropes from her "senior techs," Cheyenne spends time with her family and family's pets (her cat and her parents' dogs). Thank you, Cheyenne, for already showing us how much you love our patients and how willing you are to learn all you can!

"Yesterday our cat had an eye that was swollen shut and extremely goopy. We were able to get in the same day. They picked him up at the car (curbside due to COVID). Within 5 or 6 minutes I received a call explaining that he needed antibiotic eye drops. Despite the short time frame, he received a comprehensive evaluation. In other words, the doctor didn't just glance at him and make the determination to toss us.." says Shannon on Google

Today is Pet Remembrance Day. We are grateful for all of our clients that share their pets with us for their entire lifetime. We love our patients and grieve with their families when they cross the rainbow bridge, and we love to hear favorite memories of those pets. Please feel free to share them below!
Solar, affectionately known as "Boo," is a lovely Alaskan Malamute. When she first visited us at 12 weeks old, she was "only" 29 pounds! At 5 months old, this "little" girl was already 61 pounds! "They grow up so fast" has a new meaning with giant breeds! π€£
Ella Bella is such a beautiful girl! She was a little unsure about us, but she has been adjusting so well to life at home with her other kitty "siblings!"
Deku was named after an anime superhero, but his real life superpower is to make us fall in love with him! If you can believe it, these pictures are only about a month apart! π±
Jack Daniels was the traditional Chihuahua... little body, BIG attitude! π€£ Luckily, we like a little sass with our little dogs ππ€ͺ
Bade is so darn photogenic! This pretty little girl was more than happy to sit nicely for photos, and we can't say enough good things about her personality...and those eyes! π±π
Benny says "What?! It's National Take a Hike Day?! Sign me up!"
Even though it's colder outside, we still encourage all of our dog (and cat owners, if you're so inclined) to get outside and hike! No matter if it's a hike to the nearby park or a true hiking guru, it's important to get out and get moving!
Ollie is one curious kitten! Dr. Bollinger is always smitten with orange kittens π₯°
Coco says "Happy Thanksgiving! Time to eat!!" π
Coco was very nervous to be here, but she was very excited about some I/D stew and figured we weren't so bad! Please play it safe and keep the "human food" away from your pups this holiday!

February is Dog Training Education Month, National Cat Health Month, and Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. We are always happy to talk about the benefits of training, monitoring feline health, and spaying/neutering your pets!
However, February is also Pet Dental Health Month...and that's something that can be represented and appreciated with pictures!
This set of pictures shows why we can't always just look at a pet's mouth and declare it healthy. When your pet has a dental prophylaxis, we not only clean the teeth, but we probe the gum line for issues/defects, perform dental radiographs, and clean the "non-visible" planes of the tooth (e.g. the places you can't see while the pet is awake - the inside plane of the tooth and the planes that touch the other teeth).

We will miss you, Erin!

Today is also National Poultry Day, but unfortunately we haven't had a recent visit from one of our fine, feathered friends!
Lewis says "Kiss me, I'm handsome! Wait...is that not the saying?!"
Happy St. Patrick's Day from all of us at ACCW!
Hairless and ~fabulous~ π₯°
Dr. Heyer was promptly climbed all over when meeting Rose (all tan) and Reath (orange and white) - a mother and son (respectively) Cornish Rex duo! These sweet kids got clean bills of health and lots of love from our team!
Today is King Lewis' "birthday!" ππ
8 years ago, this nutty, loving, bossy, handsome, hilarious cat made his way from the shelter to our clinic and our hearts. We are calling Lewis 13 years old based on his estimated age at adoption and how long we've had him, but this spry fella is always giving us a run for our money! We are so blessed to have this gentleman around to make our days better, amuse us, "clean" us, and so so much more. π₯°π₯°π₯° π
