Hypothyroidism is a disease in which there is below normal function of the thyroid gland which controls metabolism. Hypothyroid dogs will often be lethargic, obese, and have hair loss, occasionally they will exhibit neurologic problems, and cardiovascular disease. This is the most common endocrine disease in dogs. It is diagnosed by a blood test and can be managed with medication to supplement the thyroid.
