Have you ever wondered what the Leptospirosis part of your dogs’ vaccine is? Leptospirosis (commonly called ‘Lepto’) is a bacterial infection that dogs can get from being outside. It is spread in infected animals’ urine, and can also be found in water and soil. It infects the liver and kidneys, and can cause failure of both of these organs. Treatment is possible, but typically requires hospitalization and intensive care. Humans can become infected with Lepto as well. The good news is that the vaccine will protect them from getting this infection, and the vaccine does need to be given yearly. We do recommend that all dogs are vaccinated against this. Contact us if you have questions!

Cooler weather is upon us, but that does not mean the parasites will all go away! We still recommend administering heartworm prevention and flea/tick prevention year round. When we have warmer days in the fall/winter, those pesky parasites will come out, and if your pet is not on prevention, they are at risk of getting diseases! Is monthly heartworm prevention too hard to remember? Ask us about ProHeart 12 - a single injection provides 12 MONTHS of heartworm prevention. Unfortunately, we do not have a year long flea/tick prevention - we still recommend monthly prevention for this. And yes, this is an actual picture of what heartworms look like!

With the weather cooling off, many of your pets may start to experience arthritis pain and irritation. Dogs and cats display pain very differently - dogs are usually more outward with expression of pain. Often times you may notice lameness, sore areas when you touch them, crying out in pain, or a change in behavior - becoming grumpy or lethargic. Cats may do the above, but you may also notice them hiding, sitting hunched up, lack of grooming in certain areas, excessive vocalization/meowing, development of litter box issues, or even restlessness/aggression. Consider joint supplements (glucosamine and chondroitin) for both dogs and cats if you notice the above, or schedule a visit for a more personalized pain management plan tailored specifically to your pet!

Why is dental care so important for your pets? The same as human health care, it is recommended to undergo yearly dental cleanings to not only clean their teeth, but to also obtain intra-oral radiographs to make sure that the teeth are healthy under the gum line (in the bone). Keeping a clean mouth has been shown to reduce the chance of disease (heart and kidney disease) and can increase your pet’s life span. Not to mention, their breath will also smell much better when they are sitting next to you on the couch! Contact us to schedule a FREE Oral Assessment and Treatment to evaluate your pet’s teeth and discuss if a dental cleaning is right for them!
