It’s World Rabies Day. Remember how important it is to keep your pet’s rabies vaccine up to date. Puppies & kittens should receive their first rabies vaccination at 16 weeks of age. Pets must be vaccinated again in one year, & then a three-year rabies vaccine is generally administered for the rest of your pet’s life.

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Did you know Chow Chows are not born with blue tongues?. In fact, Chow Chow puppies have pink tongues, just like other breeds. The blue-black color develops as their eyes open. Breed standards dictate that: “Sometimes the pigment change is slower, but the tongue pigment must always be complete by the time the puppy is about six months old.”
It’s National Veterinary Technician Week and we are so thankful for our wonderful vet techs and all of our amazing staff 💕

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Did you know that between 2002 and 2012 the average lifespan of cats increased by about 1 year?! This is largely thanks to more and more owners focusing on preventative medicine rather than primarily coming to the vet when the pet is not feeling well.

Naoc and Storm are probably the coolest Shepherds you will ever meet!!
As our pets age, pathological changes are more frequently picked up through the use of routine bloodwork and other diagnostics making it very important for your pet to visit us more than once a year. Our doctors recommend bi-annual visits when your pets reach the age of 7.
Dr. John and Kenai discussed the importance of giving monthly heartworm prevention year-round! Remember to give your pet their Novemeber dose!!
Your pet will love Doggy Day Care at The Lodge! One of the primary reason that dogs can develop destructive behaviors is boredom or separation anxiety. When a dog is left by himself for several hours a day, he may become exceedingly bored or overly anxious, either way, this can manifest into a wide variety of destructive behaviors such as chewing, excessive barking or howling, and even potty accidents. At The Lodge, we offer healthy stimulation preventing these behaviors.
Theo & Rosie wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween!!!
November is National Diabetes Month and we want pet owners to be aware of the growing prevalence of diabetes in dogs and cats. Untreated, diabetes can be fatal to pets. We will check for signs of diabetes at their annual wellness exam but, in between visits, look for these possible signs of diabetes: Excessive thirst Excessive urination Inappropriate urination Weight loss (most commonly over the back), despite an overweight body condition Increased hunger Increased “whiteness” of the lens of the eye due to cataracts Blindness Weakness Lethargy Poor skin condition (like excessive dandruff or an oily hair coat)
FUN FACT FRIDAY! Mention a pom-pom in canine circles and one breed comes to mind-the elegant Poodle. While the distinctive hairdo might seem more like a fashion statement than a necessity, the Standard Poodle haircut makes sense once you understand the breed's history. Bred as a water retriever in early 17th Century Europe, the Poodle name comes from the German pudel or pudelhund, literally meaning "water dog." Since a Poodle's thick outer coat can get heavy when wet, the bottom half of the body was shorn back to help keep the dog afloat. To keep his organs warm in cold waters, the hair was kept long over the chest and head. Bracelets of ankle hair were left to protect joints from rheumatism, and a topknot was used to keep long hair out of the eyes when swimming. Colorful bows were added during competitions to help owners identify their dogs.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE! New cabinetry has been installed in our pharmacy and laboratory areas as we approach the final stages of our renovation!!
Honoring all who have served...Thank you, Veterans!!!
Little Tiffany was having some leg pain and came in limping . As soon as his Laser Therapy Session started, we saw him relax and turn his frown right-side-up!!
Little Judy is feeling nice and cozy in her room this weekend! Don't forget to make your Holiday boarding reservations early!!
FUN FACT FRIDAY - Featuring Reyka! Did you know you can tell where your greyhound was born based on their ear tattoos? Markings in only one ear means they were bred in the UK whereas markings in both ears means they were born in Ireland. The vast majority of greyhounds are born in Ireland and exported to other countries to race.
Ill-fitting dog collars can come off over your dog’s head if they are too large or can rub the fur off their neck if they are too tight. With such an incredible number of styles to choose from, it is important to know how to size them correctly. Place your dog’s new collar around the neck and snap or buckle it. Move the adjustment slide so you can place two fingers between the collar and his or her neck. Keep in mind it is important to examine your dog’s collar at least monthly for stretching, fraying or tears and proper fit, especially if you have a growing puppy.
One of the best ways to keep our best friends looking healthy and happy is focusing on preventative medicine. Our doctors recommend coming to see them a minimum of once a year for a full physical exam, early detection bloodwork and vaccines!
Olivia, a 18 week old Maine Coon, showed off her beautiful markings at her kitten wellness appointment!

It's a new month and Diane & Nico want to remind you to give your pet their heartworm prevention!! Remember that heartworm is transmitted by mosquitos which love Florida year-round. Our doctors recommend keeping your pet on prevention all 12 months of the year to help prevent this terrible disease.
Archie got his "cherry eye" repaired yesterday! Look at how handsome he looks already! Dogs and cats have upper and lower eyelids, as do we humans, but they also have a special third eyelid. This eyelid comes from the inside corner of the eye. The nictitans gland is under this third eyelid. It produces approximately 40% of the tear film that keeps the eye moist and healthy. When this gland pops out we say the pet has “cherry eye.”
Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas!! 🎄 A special thanks to our reindeer, Bree, and Jasper, our Santa!!

Poor little Jaxon is having terrible allergies. Just like humans, cats and dogs can have food allergies. And those allergic responses can range from itchy and irritating to severe and dangerous. Food allergies in pets can begin at any age. They can start even if your cat or dog has been eating the same food for months or years Dr. John has prescribed a food trial to rule out any protein allergies. Join us in wishing Jaxon a speedy recovery!
Merry Christmas from our family to yours!!

Happy 2021! Here's to seeing your pets grow even happier and healthier this year!!
However you plan to celebrate New Year's Eve this year, be safe out there (and inside!) Think proactively about what your pet has access to in your home and remember that certain foods and other substances can be toxic to pets. Many pets are frightened by loud noises, so make sure your pet is safe, comfortable and has a quiet place to hide:)

Annual wellness exams are critical to your pet’s well-being. These visits give us a chance to evaluate the overall health of your pet while also giving a baseline for their own unique bodies and tendencies. This is Abby, patiently waiting for her doctor!
Choosing a veterinarian for your pet's spay or neuter is no small task. We pride ourselves in providing our patients with the best possible care. When exploring surgical facility options, please make sure you are inquiring about important topics such as safety protocols, anesthetic protocols and monitoring, sterility and pain relief. It is important to know what each facility offers to make sure your pet will look as comfortable and restful as Cooper after his surgery ❤

Zoe is a 9 week old Bichon Frise. Bichons are adaptable companions who get on well with other dogs and children. Alert and curious, Bichons make nice little watchdogs—but they are lovers, not fighters, and operate under the assumption that there are no strangers, just friends they haven’t met yet.
Gator's reaction when we told him he was going to visit the doctor during his vacation at The Lodge! 🤣
There is a simple, safe, and effective way to ensure your pet’s safety and retrieval should they ever become lost. Microchipping is a standard procedure that implants a microchip underneath your pet’s skin. This microchip is then registered with your contact information, and can be scanned by any veterinarian or animal shelter so that they can return your pet directly to you. Save yourself the heartache and stress of a lost pet. Microchips bring pets home.
After much consideration, we have decided to continue serving you and your pet curbside through the month of January. Thank you for your patience!
Sometimes all you can say is "awwwwww" ❤
This is Penny, a Bernedoodle puppy! This breed is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. This hybrid blends the clever goofiness of the poodle with the placid loyalty of the Bernese. What’s more, the Bernedoodle is low- to non-shedding, and is a safe bet for most people with allergies!
We realize that undergoing a surgical procedure can be stressful for you as well as your pet. We want to assure you that your pet is in good hands with us ❤
Meet KitKat! This little girl has been staying at The Lodge and is on the prowl for her new family. She is a 3 year old, spayed female kitty with the most beautiful ice blue eyes. It’s hard for her to take a moment and pose for a photo, since her main mission includes finding someone or something to give her all the cheek scratches. She is a super sweet chatty kitty that would prefer a calm, quiet household. She previously lived with other cats, dogs, and children, but now she’s looking for something a little calmer. She is a big fan of people! She has a little bit of a complicated medical history, so send us a message if you are interested in hearing more! We would love to help this beauty find her forever family as soon as possible!
Our state-of-the-art, in-house laboratory combined with our staff of highly trained medical professionals help us create an accurate picture of your pet’s health in the shortest time possible.
We will continue serving you and your pet curbside for the month of February. Thank you for your continued patience as we strive to keep everyone safe and healthy!
Daily brushing in combination with canine or feline dental treats and regular exams by our veterinarians can significantly help with your pets' oral hygiene and overall dental health. Ask us about getting your pet used to teeth brushing!
Breed Spotlight! - The Doberman Pinscher Dobermans are compactly-built dogs—muscular, fast, and powerful—standing between 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder. The body is sleek but substantial, and is covered with a glistening coat of black, blue, red, or fawn, with rust markings. These elegant qualities, combined with a noble, wedge-shaped head and an easy, athletic way of moving have earned Dobermans a reputation as royalty in the canine kingdom.
February is National Pet Dental Health Month! Remember dental care is as important to animals as it to us. Good oral health significantly prevents problems your pet may have in the future. The good thing about dental disease is that it is easily preventable! The best thing you can do to help keep your pet's mouth healthy is brushing their teeth once daily with specially formulated pet toothpaste (do not use human toothpaste). When introduced early enough or correctly, most pets enjoy having their teeth brushed!
How stylish is Wilder Cowboy in his avocado bowtie?!!! 😍

More than 80% of dogs and 60% of cats over the age of three have some form of active dental disease. Periodontal disease refers to inflammation or infection of the tissue that surrounds the tooth. When plaque hardens into tartar and accumulates around the gum line, it can cause inflammation (known as gingivitis) and recession of the gum line. This allows bacteria to spread into the tooth socket, which can create a painful abscess and even organ failure if the bacteria spreads to the blood stream. It's a good idea to have your dog examined regularly, once or twice a year, for periodontal disease, as early treatment may be able to preserve your pet's teeth

Chinese Crested, Chip, is helping us explain the difference between two complaints that seem similar but are quite different: vomiting and regurgitation. When a dog regurgitates, the coughed-up material typically consists of undigested food, water and saliva. It is often expelled in a cylindrical shape since regurgitated material is usually the food or matter in the esophagus. It comes out seemingly effortlessly, without muscle contraction. Vomiting, conversely, is much more active. It will cause muscles to contract and the whole body to tense. When a dog vomits, the food or object is typically coming from the stomach or upper small intestine. You will likely hear the dog retching and see food that is undigested or partially digested, along with clear liquid if it's from the stomach, or yellow or green liquid (bile) if it is from the small intestine. In either case, our doctors recommend scheduling a consultation to discuss treatment.
Our doctors are constantly studying and researching to bring your pets the best care possible. Give your favorite ACW doctor a shoutout!
We will continue serving you and your pet curbside for the month of February. Thank you for your continued patience as we strive to keep everyone safe and healthy!

We love our pets and we will do anything for them — including giving them medication when they need it. Of course, our pets may not always cooperate when it comes to taking medication. Our doctors recommend using Royal Canin Pill Assist to help with the struggle. Some of the benefits of this product are: - Soft, shapeable texture can be easily molded around a pill capsule or tablet, disguising it as a treat. - Moderate calorie alternative to hiding pills in cheese, peanut butter, and other human food. - Low stress and less mess solution to making sure medium and large breed dogs take the medication they need.
We will continue serving you and your pet curbside for the month of February. Thank you for your continued patience as we strive to keep everyone safe and healthy!
Happy National Dog Biscuit Day! Enjoy (in moderation).
BREED SPOTLIGHT! - Samoyed We couldn't get over how beautiful Coco is! Did you know that even their most delightful feature, a perpetual smile, has a practical function?? The upturned corners of the mouth keep Sammies from drooling, preventing icicles from forming on the face.
At The Lodge, we have a creative and super cute solution to make sure all pets are comfortable when being blow-dried after a bath! A headband helps muffle the sound and prevents excessive air hitting the ears which can be distressing to the guest.
All dogs scratch, lick, and chew — but if it's becoming more frequent and excessive, it may mean something more. If your dog is scratching, licking, or chewing like crazy, you want to provide fast, effective relief. Our doctors recommend APOQUEL which starts relieving allergic dog itch within 4 hours — and controls it within 24 hours.
Today's Love Your Pet Day, but let's be honest--that's every day! Consider going the extra mile and surprising your pet with a new toy or some tasty new treats! ❤️

Our doctors recommend getting your pet vaccinated against Leptospirosis yearly. This bacteria thrives in humid, tropical weather and can be transmitted to humans. It’s a disease carried by wild animals that can be totally non symptomatic–so it is possible that if a raccoon or possum comes in your yard, urinates on your grass overnight, and your dog goes out the next morning and starts sniffing around, your pet may be exposed — without ever seeing that animal. Leptospirosis typically begins in both humans and dogs with vague and flu-like symptoms, starting with fever. But if untreated with antibiotics, the infection can lead to kidney and liver failure, meningitis and severe respiratory distress.

In honor of March being Women's History Month, we'd like to share some information on common health concerns that affect mostly female pets. Pyometra: A uterine issue occurring when a female dog or cat is intact (not spayed) and never bred. Hormones released during each heat cycle can cause cysts in the lining of the uterus which can become infected and fill the uterus with pus. Mammary cancer: A common female dog and cat problem affecting those who go into their first heat before they're spayed. Keep in mind that pets fixed before their first heat can also develop mammary cancer, the risk is minimal at 0.05 percent. Vaginitis & Vulvaplasty: Infections can happen often in females, most cases occur when the pet licks its genitals and transfers bacteria from the tongue into the vaginal cavity. Upon examination, our doctor may determine there is a problem with the physical structure of of the vulva. We can then surgically repair it to minimize future issues.

Dog flu is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by canine influenza virus. There are currently 2 strains in the US: H3N2 & H3N8. Because dog flu is a relatively new virus, most unvaccinated dogs are susceptible to infection by both viruses. Because the virus spreads through direct contact, the air and even contaminated surfaces, our doctors recommend getting your dog vaccinated against both strains yearly regardless of if you have plans to frequent a dog park or boarding facility.
What's better than one puppy?? TWO puppies!!! 😍
