It’s that time of the year again! It’s time to make sure your pets are on preventatives for heartworms, ticks, fleas and intestinal parasites. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal parasitic condition that is transmitted by mosquitoes. The American Heartworm Society recommends annual testing for heartworm infection for your dogs. Our feline friends are recommended to be put on preventives March through December. While treatment for heartworm disease in dogs is possible, it is a complicated and expensive process, taking weeks for infected animals to recover. There are a variety of options for preventing heartworm infection, including chewables and topicals. All of the products listed below are extremely effective when administered properly on a timely schedule. Lyme disease is a common and potentially debilitating bacterial disease that is transmitted to dogs (and people) by the common deer tick. Lyme disease is now very common in this area due to the large increase in the deer population and deer ticks. We recommend that all dogs be vaccinated against Lyme disease. Lyme disease can be prevented by vaccinating yearly and administering Frontline Plus, Simparica Trio, or Nexgard monthly to prevent ticks. Heartgard Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) - Heartgard Plus is effective in preventing heartworm disease and offers broad protection against roundworms and hookworms.
