It is with the heaviest of hearts to share we have lost Sandra Weaver. With her family’s permission we are sharing this devastating news. She touched the lives of so many and will be dearly missed. As of January 1, 2021 The Animal Hospital of Towne Lake and The Cat Clinic of Woodstock will no longer be performing elective declaws(onchectomy). The American Association of Feline Practitioners oversees the Standards for Cat Friendly Practice. We, along with the AAFP, believe in having the highest standards of care for cats. To be in compliance with the cat friendly practices, we must discontinue elective declaws. There are many studies concluding that the amputation of the toes does cause progressive problems, i.e. arthritis, litter box aversion and behavioral changes. With information and products available to help train cats to use what we consider appropriate scratching areas, the risk of doing declaws outweigh the benefits. We can recommend training strategies and products to help find a solution for your home. Please contact us for any help you may need.

Water quality testing conducted on January 27 in the Chattahoochee River at the Gold Branch Trail in Marietta revealed small traces of cyanobacteria-based toxins that can potentially be damaging to human and animal health.
On January 26, we were notified of the suspected presence of cyanobacteria when it was reported that a dog named Chewy had passed away on Sunday, one day after swimming in the river along Gold Branch Trail. This is the first incident of suspected health effects associated with toxic cyanobacteria blooms in the main stem of the Chattahoochee River. Cyanobacteria (or blue-green algae) are naturally produced microscopic organisms that are found in various waterways across the world. In some cases they can produce harmful toxins. An investigation is ongoing to try to determine if toxins are to blame in this unfortunate situation.
We are working closely with the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and University of Georgia to conduct additional testing for toxins produced by cyanobacteria. CRK recommends that pet owners always exercise caution when exploring natural waterways and avoid stagnant pools of water. Contact your local veterinarian and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division should your dog show symptoms of illness after coming into contact with natural waterways.
CRK and many vital partner organizations and agencies are constantly working to improve water quality, ensure safe recreation, and prevent excess nutrients and pollution from entering our watershed. We will share updates here as frequently as possible. Our sympathies remain with Chewy’s family as we work to keep people and pets as safe as possible while enjoying the Chattahoochee River.

One of the most important aspects of being a veterinarian is making sure our patients are comfortable with coming to see us. But sometimes the anxiety of being put in a carrier, getting in the car, and going to a new, weird place is just too much. We now have feline fear free kits to help solve this problem!!
To help our kitty friends, this kit includes a pack of Feliway, brochures to help anxiety at home, a yummy snack, and some Gabapentin capsules for only $15!
If there is a way to help ease anxiety, we want to help.
Jamie’s fish, Wanda, was having some trouble the other day. From our tech, Amy: “She should only have 1 black bubble in her tummy which is her swim bladder. When there are 2 everything gets tricky. She was constipated so her poop put so much pressure on her swim bladder she was butt up floating and couldn't swim to the bottom! So an Epsom salt soak in multiple buckets of differing amounts of salt contents. She was textbook and pooped in every bucket and seems all better!!!
