Time to walk the dog. We have been doing this a lot more lately. Oct. 1-7 is National Walk Your Dog Week, shining the sunlight on canine behavior issues and obesity. Walking your dog is good for their waistlines and mental health (and yours too). It's a beautiful day in Hampton Roads, so grab the leash. We'll see you out there! #AVCVAcares
Let’s talk about lenses. Just like us, our animal friends have a lens in both eyes. It is responsible for focusing light to the retina in the back of the eye. When we see cataracts, this is where they develop. What we’re seeing in this case in an anterior lens luxation (when the lens falls into the front chamber of the eyes). This can happen primarily or secondarily, but is usually very painful and can lead to damage of the endothelium and severe glaucoma if left untreated. In the second photo, you can see what both lenses look like when they’re extracted. #AVCVAcares #AVCVAconditions
The promise of a better life. That’s a pledge pet parents make when they adopt. October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, a time to help homeless animals in shelters find loving, happy homes. In addition to adoption, you can volunteer, donate and provide much-needed supplies to your favorite animal support group. We have some great ones here in Hampton Roads. Check our listing at https://animalvisioncenterva.com/saving-lives-one-pet-at-a-time/ #AVCVAcares #AVCVAadoptionlove
Shelby presented with chronic squinting of her left eye. The cause for her squinting? Moderate entropion of her lower left eyelid margin. Sometimes we can recommend collagen fillers to correct entropion, but Shelby's was too extensive and surgical correction was needed to restore comfort and preserve corneal health. Here she is giving a kiss to Dr. Belk. It was great to see you sweet Shelby! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients

What a wonderful feature on Ankida Ridge Vineyards. Dr. Dennis Vrooman (previous owner of Beach Pet Hospital), and his wife Christine, own and operate this lovely winery in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our referring veterinarians can join us, along with Dennis and his son Nathan, for “wine notes” and a discussion of your interesting cases, on our upcoming Ophtho Rounds and Wine event, Oct. 22 via Zoom. Check your email for details. DISTINCTIONVA.COM Ankida Ridge Winery and The Accidental Pinot - Distinction

A shout out to the staff of Friendship Veterinary Hospital in Norfolk! As the latest members of AVCVA’s Breakfast Bunch, they received coffee and early morning deliciousness delivered to their door in September. Each month, we randomly select one of our referring veterinary practices to receive a scrumptious Panera breakfast box and beverages. Thank you to the Friendship team for your support. We love working with you! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApartners

Happy birthday to us! This month marks our fifth year of helping animals see a better life. We officially launched our business in April 2015, but October is when we opened our doors and began seeing the sweetest pet patients ever. Here’s a peek at what we looked like then! Check back for more photos and remembrances in the days ahead as we celebrate five years and counting! #AVCVAcares #AVCVAfiveandthriving

A year ago tomorrow, we officially opened our business with facility tours, a petting zoo, a silent auction, an agility course and lunch. Of course, it was BYOD—bring your own dog! We were so grateful for this day, and for all of the wonderful clients and pet patients we’ve come to know and love since. #AVCVAcares #AVCVAfiveandthriving
We are excited to relaunch our free financial wellness series, this time for Hampton Roads medical professionals, veterinarians and first responders. Before we opened our doors in 2015, Animal Vision Center of Virginia operated as a mobile clinic. On our rounds we saw so many wonderful pet patients, like these cuties featured here. At the same time, our office buildout on Great Neck Road was coming together. We're 5 years and counting this month. Stay tuned for more memories! #AVCVAcares #AVCVAfiveandthriving

Can you guess this ocular abnormality? If you said Iris Atrophy this is correct! We see this typically as an age-related change when the iris begins to thin. There’s no cure and typically the only complication we see associated with this is life sensitivity and abnormal pupillary light reflex responses. #AVCVAcares #AVCVAconditions

They may seem aloof and independent, but cats need their close up too. Today is National Cat Day, which promotes adoptions of these purrfectly wonderful pets. They love interacting with their humans, are fastidious groomers, know their names when called and have been known to lower the risk of heart and stroke in their owners. Sounds good to us. We recently saw “Rosie” for an abnormal left eye and quickly discovered she had a conjunctival dermoid. A congenital condition, dermoids are heritable in origin and occur when normal tissue grows in an abnormal place (i.e., hair on the eye). Once Rosie is a little older, we will be able to remove the dermoid surgically. Until then, she has temporary tacking sutures to keep her comfortable. Rock on Rosie! You are one sweet pup. #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients

You will recognize Cherry Eye when you see it, a pink mass protruding behind the third eyelid of your pet or patient. The clinical name for it is Prolapsed Nictitans Gland. Here are a few patients that we have treated lately for this condition (they are doing well!). If your pet is exhibiting this tell-tale sign, call us today at (757) 749-4838.

Can you believe this weather? Can you further believe today is National Take a Hike Day? Please note that practice will close early on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 3:00 p.m. We will resume normal hours on Friday, Nov. 27. We hope your holiday involves good food, cozy days and quality time with your pets. Enjoy! #AVCVAcares
Is it okay to slip my dog a treat from the table? We don’t condone this practice, but we do recommend any of these animal-friendly foods, packed with vitamins and nutrients for optimal eye health: Boiled broccoli, raw carrots, salmon and tuna, eggs, steamed kale and cooked sweet potatoes. Here's to healthy eating this holiday. Bon appetite! #AVCVAcares
Did you know that people are more likely to adopt a shelter pet if they’ve spoken with someone who has already done so? Tomorrow is Celebrate Shelter Pets Day, an opportunity for adopters to encourage others to consider owning a shelter pet. Adopters, we invite you to post your stories here, along with a photo of your lovey. And, if you’re looking for a pet, please consider any of the Hampton Roads area shelters and support groups in our area. #AVCVAcares #AVCVAinfocus

We treat a lot of cataract cases at AVCVA, and we love seeing the moments following surgery when pets clearly see their owners following months of blurry vision. If you pet’s eyes appear cloudy, or she is misjudging distances or bumping into objects, give us a call at (757) 749-4838. These are common signs of cataracts and it may be time to have your loved one’s eyes checked. #AVCVAcares #AVCVAconditions

Is your dog showing a red, painful eye with discharge, or dried discharge on the eyelashes and eyelids? These are signs of Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KSC), also known as Dry Eye. Oh, Gunner! We’ve been seeing this chap since April, when he first came in for an indolent ulcer. He read his text book and ultimately developed an indolent ulcer in his other eye this past October! Dairy wasted no time in grabbing a quick nap during her exam with us! She came to us for squinting and discharge noticed from both eyes. Her parents noticed she was becoming more lethargic and that her right eyelid was very red. All of that irritation, redness and behavior change is due to the presence of entropion along both eyelids. It still feels like the holidays around here, because we just delivered copies of this cool little booklet as a gift to our local general veterinarians. Dr. Heather developed every page of this guide, complete with ocular anatomy visuals, differential lists and ophthalmic exam tips. It’s intended for our veterinary partners when they are considering ocular diagnoses or potential referrals to our practice. Small enough to put in your pocket, but comprehensive enough to help with all of your ophthalmic cases! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApartners #AVCVAjustforvets
We really enjoy working with the staff of General Booth Veterinary Hospital. Their name was selected to be the recipient of our most recent Breakfast Bunch delivery from Panera Bread! We appreciate their collaboration and referrals. Keep an eye out next month for our next randomly selected “BB” recipient. #AVCVAcares #AVCVApartners
Dogs are our best friends, true, loyal, protective and always excited to see us. Imagine their thrill when we treat them to Doggie Date Night, this evening. Yes, it's a thing, on Feb. 3! This national recognition event is just for them—and us. So, spend extra time with your pet, play a few games, snuggle on the couch while you watch “Lassie Come Home” or go for a long walk. They will love it, and you will too. #AVCVAcares #AVCVAdoglove
Well. There's no hiding how Mya feels about having her eye pressure checked. One of those days. #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients
Kumaru is too kute. He presented for a mild recurrence of conjunctivitis, which we suspect is due to underlying feline herpesvirus. Kumaru did great on the previous course of therapy, but is now having a mild occurrence. We discussed long-term management options with his owner during his visit. Looking forward to seeing him again on his next recheck appointment. Till then, toodaloo Kumaru! #AVCVAcares #AVACApetpatients
Baron is looking super-classy and staying warm in this chilly weather with his red plaid scarf! He had a great checkup. His underlying KCS (keratoconjunctivitis sicca; ‘dry eye’) and endothelial degeneration are under good control. See you in six months when it’s warmer out Baron! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients

Chanel is aptly named! Looking trés chic, this three-year old Maltese first came to see us last September for presumed blindness. Her owner reported that she is seeing much further at home and adjusting comfortably since being under Dr. Brookshire’s care. That’s good news indeed. Au revoir for now, Mademoiselle Chanel! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients
In a practice setting, teamwork is essential in obtaining the best outcomes for our pet patients. We love this shot of Dr. Belk and Veronica working together. Thank you Samantha for capturing the moment! #AVCVAcares #AVCVAteam
Here’s our friend Finn, a ten-week old Golden Retriever. We saw him for an eyelid laceration. Evidently, play time with kitty led to an accidently swat! He was a perfect pup as we repaired his third eyelid. (Notice the green color, a dye we used to determine if there was damage to his lacrimal duct.) All was well, and Finn should be feeling fabulous again soon! #AVCVAcares #AVCVAaccidentshappen
Roxie Heart has been a long-time patient of Dr. Brookshire's, and we are so sorry to learn that she recently passed away. A tiny girl (1.7 pounds!), she was a practice favorite. Our entire staff is thinking of this sweet pet and her family during this difficult time. #AVCVAcares
We love working with animals from the wild in concert with our region’s wildlife rehabilitation groups and with the Virginia Zoo and Virginia Living Museum. Today is National Wildlife Day, a chance to bring awareness of endangered animals nationally as well as globally and to acknowledge zoos and outstanding animal sanctuaries globally for everything they do to help preserve this planet's animals and educate the public about conservation. #AVCVAcares #AVCVApartners

Buddy is our buddie indeed. We saw this three-year old Shih tzu mix a few weeks ago for his ocular pressure check. We conduct these when patients have primary or secondary glaucoma or elevated pressures. In Buddy's case, we performed a Diode laser CPC last September to help him gain more definitive control of his ocular pressures, without having to rely so heavily on medical therapy. As a result of this surgery, his pressures have been under excellent control, and we’ve reduced medical therapy to just twice daily. See you back in a few months for another check, Buddy. Keep on groovin’! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients

Patrick the Pug rolled in on a recent chilly day, wearing his cool blue coat. He was seen for the removal of an eyelid mass. We don’t fully understand what causes these benign eyelid masses to form in the first place. But there is some thought that genetics could play a role, since we see them more commonly in some breeds of dogs than others. These masses are easily removed by excision under local anesthetic, followed by cryotherapy, and don’t require putting patients under general anesthesia. Just as he rolled in cool and collected, Patrick rolled back out feeling and looking great. #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients
We loved seeing Akila one last time for a follow-up appointment. Earlier this month we performed a bilateral enucleation (removal of both eyes) on our beautiful friend, from chronic, uncontrollable glaucoma. She is doing well and getting along just fine with her loss of vision. For pet parents facing such a transition, we publish a “Be Kind, I’m Blind” brochure with info to help both pet and owner adjust to life at home. Big Hugs for Akila! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients
Sweet Simba was here for the removal of a cancerous mass growing on the lateral canthus—the corner of the eye where the upper and lower eyelids meet. Surgery was a big success, and we were able to save both the eye and eyelid function. This cutie-pie pittie is doing great post-operatively. See you soon Simba! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients

We, of course, are fascinated with "all things eyes" in the animal world. You too? Take peek at our occasional #5Facts for Friday, and check back for more in the weeks ahead. 1. Did your hamster just wink? They’re not being coy; most blink one eye at a time. 2. An Ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain! 3. Polar bears have a specialized third eyelid that helps them filter UV light; good to have in the land of the Midnight Sun. 4. Dogs see the colors of their world in either blue, yellow or grey. We like these colors too. 5. Finally, poet William Blake knew a thing or two when he wrote "The Tyger." Tigers’ eyes do burn bright, “in the forest of the night.” Night vision in these animals is six times greater than that of a human. #5facts
It’s Flynn for the win! We have been seeing this sweet, nine-year old Maltese for nodular blepharitis/meibomianitis (inflammation of the eyelid margins). Flynn’s eyelids are now fully normal after the course of medical therapy, and he is feeling so much better. Looking fab Flynn! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients
Feline herpesvirus is a common and highly contagious condition. We’ll be discussing this at our next vets-only Ophtho Rounds & Wine event, March 25, from 7-8 p.m. on Zoom. This week is for all the professional pet sitters — those who watch over our pets while we work, go on vacation and when we’re under the weather. We wouldn’t trust our loved ones to just anyone. We trust you. Happy National Pet Sitters Week! Thank you for all that you do. #AVCVAcares
Hello Happy Harper! We saw this five-month old pup for this unusual “googly-eyed” appearance that came on suddenly. Harper was diagnosed with extraocular polymyositis, an auto-immune inflammation of the muscles that surround the eye. As you can see in the first pic, the swelling can make a pet’s eyes appear swollen/protruding and the whites more visible. It’s predominant in large breed dogs, including Golden retrievers, like Harper. EP usually comes on at adolescence, and we can generally control clinical signs with oral steroids. That’s the therapy we used for Harper—and look at this golden boy now! What a cutie (and quite photogenic!). #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients
AVCVA is pleased to announce the launch of our first clinical trial, to determine if the non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medication Ketorolac influences the time for corneal ulcer healing. Criteria for the study includes dogs diagnosed with corneal ulcers, including superficial ulcers, indolent ulcers, or mid-stromal ulcers without malacia or significant infiltrates. If you have a pet or are seeing a pet patient that would be a candidate for the trial, please let us know. We have all the details at https://animalvisioncenterva.com/nsaid-clinical-trial/
Here come Tio, Havoc, Poseidon and Phoebe! This gaggle of gorgeous Goldens presented to us for their annual Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Eye Certification Registry exams. Genetic eye diseases have become more common among purebred dogs, and it’s important to know whether yours is a carrier for a specific ocular disease. Thank you golden beauties, for helping the breed maintain healthy eyes! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients ANIMALVISIONCENTERVA.COM AVCVA HOME

Axel was here this week for a recheck evaluation of a melting ulcer in the left eye. This sweet five-year old Boston terrier continues to improve with each visit and is fully comfortable at this time. As you can see, he is ready to celebrate St. Patty’s Day. When we saw Sandy for her initial exam, she presented for uveitis. Sandy was diagnosed with a cataract and lens/iris granuloma, most likely secondary to a parasitic infection (E.cunuculi). She has done very well following her course of therapy and is now scheduled for surgery to remove the cataract. Isn't she a sweetie? #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients
Two lovely ladies looking for their fur-ever home! John Koehler is with Heather Brookshire. March 23 at 8:49 PM · Meet Droopy and Pixie from the Virginia Beach SPCA. They are sisters of another mother and are looking for a forever family to adopt them together. Why? Because they go together and love each other. Droopy is anything but droopy. She’s lively and happy, loves other dogs and is convinced she is a squirrel whisperer. She’s 6-years-old and is a redbone-coonhound mix with a gorgeous brindle coat. Pixie is an 8-year-old Chihuahua mix. She is aptly named. She’s the tiny boss lady with a wagging tail. Lively and loving. To adopt Droopy and Pixie together, visit them at the VBSPCA shelter and fill out an adoption application. You can learn more about them and other adoptable animals at vbspca.com. Please pass the word about our two 4-legged friends. Love, John PS- I will with pleasure send a canvas print of Droopy and Pixie to the person who adopts them.
What a tiny little dude. As you can see, Cobalt is the snuggliest, squishiest little Frenchie! Just two months old, he came to see us for anterior segment dysgenesis and KCS. While delayed in normal development, his eyes are improving and so is his vision! #AVCVAcares #AVCVApetpatients

In addition to being cute and cuddly, puppies are a big responsibility. Today is National Puppy Day, a time to bring awareness to the needs of orphaned puppies that weren’t a “good fit” for some homes. If you’re thinking about adoption, consider taking in a puppy from a local shelter. They need more than hugs; they need a good home and dedicated pet parents. #AVCVAcares #AVCVApuppylove
