Great explanation of charcot for the non medical professional Advanced Foot & Ankle Center of Utah September 7, 2018 at 8:10 PM · Have you heard of Charcot Foot before? If not that is probably a good thing! Today's fun fact Friday will teach you about this one. Our diabetic patients should pay extra attention to this post. Charcot foot is a condition that causes weakening of the bones in the foot. It occurs in people who have moderate-to-severe neuropathy (nerve damage) most commonly as a result of diabetes. The condition is serious. As it progresses, the joints collapse, bones weaken and fracture and the foot becomes deformed, creating areas of increased pressure and an increased risk of ulceration, infection and eventually, amputation. Charcot foot occurs most often in people with diabetes mellitus. It occurs at the same rate in men and women with diabetes and develops in both feet in approximately 20 percent of cases. According to the American Diabetes Association, 60–70 percent of people with diabetes develop peripheral nerve damage that can lead to Charcot foot and about 0.5 percent of these patients develop the condition. In most cases, onset of Charcot foot occurs after the age of 50, and after the patient has had diabetes for 15 to 20 years. #podiatryfunfacts This is actually one condition in which we are very different than most other providers who treat this condition. We have two doctors in our group who have specialized in treated this condition with what is called external fixation or "the ring". This is a procedure that is performed once the patient reaches the point of amputation. But while most providers would move forward with amputation, Dr. Clark and Dr. David Seegmiller often times can perform this procedure and save the patients foot. How cool is modern medicine!
