🦊Here’s a chance for you to get to know a little bit about Answers, Plus! - who we are, who I am and what we do!
I started Answers, Plus! In the family room of my Encinitas home after my family moved from Arizona to the San Diego area in 1995. Prior to that I was a classroom teacher and teacher trainer for almost 10 years and then got into the ACT/SAT test prep game while working as a tutor for a tutoring company.
Five years later, I decided to start my own tutoring company. I launched my new business but after a short 6 months, packed up my 4 kids, 2 dogs and 3 cats to move to the San Diego area for my husband’s new job.
Answers, Plus! Has been my business for almost 27 years now and it’s not just my business - it’s a part of my life and, sometimes, even a part of my family!
Online learning has been a special challenge for most of our families and students and I’m curious, what are the biggest challenges for you as a student or as a parent?

🦊 Procrastinating on those college essays? Pulling your hair out trying to find good topics? Have a topic but your essay’s just plain BORING?
I get it! I've been helping high school seniors with their college essays for years!
The first step is to settle on a topic or answer the question in your prompt but make sure that you “Show, Don’t Tell” your readers what you want them to know!
For example, if I want to write about how I contributed to my community by starting a recycling program at my school, you can just say that and TELL ME OR you can take me, the reader, through the steps and SHOW ME why you wanted to do that and then SHOW ME what steps you took to accomplish that task!
Does that make sense?
If you want more tips to writing a strong college essay, check out our brand new 4 part IGTV series - 10 Steps to Writing the Best College Essays!🎉‼️💥
Remember, you've got one chance to make your point in these essays and make those readers want you on their campus.
Readers aren’t going to call you up and ask you, “Hey Cindy, why was that important to you?” Or “Hey Cindy, how did you do that?”.
No, they’re going to say “NEXT!", move on, and be unimpressed with your essay.
If you’re not quite ready to start writing but need to get organized first, then check out our Feed posts to get yourself organized before you start writing - “Struggling With College Essays” Parts 1-3.
If you know a high school senior that's working on their college essays make sure to share this information with them. I know they'll appreciate it!

🦊 College Essays A Problem? We’ve got a free downloadable tip sheet to keep right next to your essays to help you work step-by-step through the process! I know that can help when you’re just getting the hang of it! Details at the end of the videos!
I’ve got my final tips to make sure that you’re writing better, stronger college essays! Let’s get this DONE!
In last part of our series about the 10 Steps to Writing More Effective College Essays, we’ll cover:
9. “Get Feedback” When you think you’re done or you want some constructive criticism (DON’T Skip this step!!!) to know what to focus in on, choose someone that’s going to be brutally honest with you. Someone that tells you your essay is MAGNIFICENT if it IS NOT, isn’t doing you any favors! That could cost you that school. Listen for my tips on who to choose and who to be careful choosing!
10. “You’re only finished when your essay really tells the reader who you are and what makes you special and it follows all 10 Steps!” There are no shortcuts in writing the best essays you can. If anyone’s response to your essay is, “Ok, so….” Or “What are you trying to say here?”, back to the drawing board!
There’s so much more in the video, so make sure to watch, and at the end of my video I have a free resource page for you to use!
That’s it for our final installment and now you have the basic steps and tips!
If you know a high school senior that’s working on these essays right now, make sure to pass this info on to them. Let’s spread the word and make writing the best college essays one less challenge we’ve got to face this year! If you missed one of the parts, all 4 parts are in my FEED and in my IGTV channel!
Phew! That was a lot, but well worth it if it helps you write winning college essays!
🦊After the video, let me know if you learned something! Share it with me in the comments below or send me a DM! I’d love to hear from you! I’ll see you on Instagram, Facebook or in ZOOM!

🦊 Hi there, high school seniors! Cranking out college essays that all sound the same? Looking to raise those essays to the next level?
I’ve got more tips to make sure that you’re writing better, stronger essays! Let’s get started!
In part 3 of our 10 Steps to Writing More Effective College Essays, we’ll cover:
6. “Details Matter!” The details of your essay will make it much, much more effective. This is going to help you “Show, Don’t Tell!” Don’t know what that means? Go back to our Part 1 of the series either in our Feed or in our IGTV channel!
7. Remember to always use the “Active Voice, Not Passive Voice!” In your essays. Just that one change makes your essays sound more direct, and more powerful!
8. “Revise, Revise, Revise”. Any good piece of writing needs some love and attention, and your college essays are critical. This is your ONE change to make an impression. Write, rewrite, rewrite and then…. Get the idea?
There’s a lot more in the video so make sure to watch, plus, my cat, Kenji makes yet another appearance!
That’s it for part 3 and our final installment will be up next to cover our final steps and tips! Make sure to Follow Us!

🦊Test prep tip today! Show your work, show your thinking!
Not just on the ACT and SAT tests, but on any test, anywhere, any time!
If you want to do your best you need to get everything else outside of your head so that you can leave your brain free to do the thinking that’s necessary to get problems or questions right. It’s kind of like multi-tasking! Sure, we think we can keep it all crammed in there and do it all at once!
WRONG! We need to get some of the thinking down on the paper.
In today’s post I’m taking you through a fairly basic test question that you could see on the SAT, ACT or on a math test.
Just follow the steps that I outline and you’ll improve your performance. Get that one right and then move on to the next one.
Get that point and then start the process over again. And remember, it’s not about speeding through questions and getting everything done. Instead, let’s focus on what we CAN do and do those well! Save the things that we’re not good at or we don’t understand to the end so we run out of time on those and not on the problems that we CAN do!
All questions are worth the same points, so focus on your strengths and don’t rush. The more you rush, the more silly mistakes and lost point opportunities! SHOW YOUR WORK, SHOW YOUR THINKING!

🦊Struggling with Zoom or Google Meets? Problems with your signal or computer?
Is your student really not “connecting” both literally and figuratively?
Well, we’ve been fighting some of these battles with our “Zoom” live tutorials and ACT/SAT small group classes since February and we’ve figured out some basic tips that can help take care of SOME of the headaches!
Just follow the steps in our post today and you should find at least one or two tips that can stop some of your growling- pay special attention to the tip #1 - Computer restart habit.
I work with two cameras, one on me and a document camera so I can demonstrate problems or review work with my students and I started to notice problems with my second camera just refusing to connect.
Once I started a fresh restart every day that problem vanished! Think of it like giving your computer a virtual “shower” every morning or evening to “wash away” some of those internet gremlins that can plague us!
Let me know in the comments below which tip you’re going to try out later today or tomorrow! Was this helpful?

🦊 We've got just 4 seats left - will one be yours? Here's why that might be the best “gift” you could give your high school Junior! Why choose Answers, Plus!?
☑️ I’m the only person that teaches these classes and students have the benefit of my 26 going on 27 years of experience teaching SAT and ACT test prep. My students in my class that just ended last weekend had an average 8 point gain in their ACT section scores over the 9 weeks of classes! 8 ACT points! That’s about 250-270 SAT points!
My program works and… best of all, it includes everything! Books, handouts, a notebook, plus unlimited access to full practice ACT and SAT tests from Class 4 through December of Senior year!
PLUS, there are LIVE test reviews after each practice test also included in the package!
Why add one more thing to the mix?
TIME!
Time's the one thing that our kids don't have an unlimited supply of, and for some students, and yours might be one of them, they need as much time as possible to get their SAT and ACT test scores where they need them to be 💪💪 for the schools they're considering.
Time right now, in the middle of the school year, when finals, AP testing, and more are still in the distance.
Questions? Email, call, or text me, Cindy Fox, in the contact buttons in my Bio above! I teach all the ACT/SAT Seminar classes and I’ve been teaching ACT and SAT test prep for almost 27 years!
Oh, and in case you didn’t see it, make sure to check the last part of today’s post about Small Business Saturday! Mark your calendar and grab your friends!

🦊 Thank you Veterans and the families of Veterans! We honor your today and are thankful for all you do and sacrifice every day.

🦊 Want more points on the SAT & ACT tests?
Then let’s learn the strategies and formulas that will get us those points!
Cindy Fox, here, with Answers, Plus! And I’ve got my Friday Test Tips from Answers, Plus!
Today we’re learning how to do questions on the SAT and ACT tests that require the circle formula! Neither one of those tests are going to give you that formula so this is a notecard opportunity! Put it on a notecard and then learn it! It’s worth several points just about every SAT and ACT test!
We also need to be using those other strategies that I’ve been teaching you in our previous Friday Test Tips! Make sure that you are underlining your key info AND make sure to add that info to your diagrams! 👀Got it?
SAT and ACT will always give you enough information in the questions to get to the answer (with the occasional exception of those AWFUL “there’s not enough info” questions!) so pay attention to what’s there! Underline it.
Notice in the steps above how I take note of what we know, what we don’t know and I also use our P.O.E., process of elimination so that even if I can’t get any further in the question, I’m still down to 2 answers and those are AWESOME ODDS!🎉
Make sure to save this post if it was helpful and follow us because every Friday (and an occasional Saturday) I’ve got more SAT and ACT questions and how to do them for you!
Let’s Get More Points!

🦊 I've got some awesome news to share with all of my high school students AND parents of high school students!
College Board has announced a series of 4 Virtual College Fairs as part of their Big Future program.
🎓These are all free and are organized by the section of the country where the colleges are located.
🎓This is mainly for Sophomores and Juniors but other students can join as well!
🎓I have inside the post the link to register - only students may register - and you can sign up for 1, 2, 3, or even all 4 different virtual fairs!
🎓This is an exciting chance for your teenagers to see the real reason they want to work hard and do well in their classes! So which area is your target?
Make sure to "Bookmark" those pages you want and share with a friend, or two or more!
Now there's NO reason your student can't check out schools and ask questions of college reps during these sessions!
Let me know in the comments below if you registered and which region you're most excited about!
🦊
🦊 I like to live by this one and remind my tutorial students and test prep students of this all the time.
I often look back in my life to when my husband and I decided we were going to move to California. It's funny - it was when everyone from CA was moving out of California to AZ and elsewhere and of course, we were going against the flow!
I had just started my own tutoring business in Tucson about 6 months earlier when my husband landed a job in Fallbrook that would give us a way to move to the San Diego area.
Somehow, with 4 kids, 2 dogs, and a cat we packed my husband up the day after Christmas 📦and started on our California journey.
Two days later we found a house that would rent to our troop and a day or two after that we left my husband and a giant trunk filled with a few essentials and a sleeping bag to manage alone in a 2 story 4 bedroom house while the rest of us headed back to Tucson.
To this day I dont remember how I did it, but I wrapped up school for the 4 kids, packed, shut down the new business, painted, put the house on the market, sold it, and by the end of January, almost a month from when we dropped my husband off, the Fox family 🦊🦊🦊🦊🦊🦊 (all 6 of us at that time!) was officially in Oceanside, CA.
It seemed impossible, and my husband and I still marvel at how we did that, and how we managed other more challenging times. I've realized that when you have to, you just put your head down and work to get it done!
We are living proof of that today! No matter how hard it gets, if we just stay focused on what needs to get done and put one foot in front of the other, we CAN do the impossible! 👣 👣
What's a time that something seemed impossible but somehow you managed to get it done? Share in the comments below...
🦊
🦊 Did you know that your Junior SHOULD still plan to take the SAT and ACT tests as soon as possible?
I know, I get it . . . it's all so confusing and if you've registered for a test, they keep canceling the test dates!
Plus, what the heck is going on with the SAT? Feeling a little overwhelmed?😱
It's hard not to be!!! And that's where my job and Answers. Plus! comes in. Our classes and tutorials can help families and students figure ALL of this out!
You're the first to get notifications, changes will be explained to you in detail, and our Seminar class students have support from when their classes start to December of Senior year! 🙌 🎉 🎓
✅So, let's start to break some of it down - yes, SAT (College Board) is dropping their essay after the June testing of this year and it will no longer be an option after that.
✅Colleges are no longer requiring the SAT essay as part of their admissions. We're still working on clarification about the ACT essay - so if you're registered, don't touch that one!
✅If your student has registered for an SAT test + the writing option, just log into your College Board account, click on your test date information in your portal, and then there should be an option to cancel JUST the optional writing test.
Cancel JUST the essay and ZAP!! you should get a refund! It should be that easy!
So, if you're feeling like you want to just wait it out to see if colleges will choose NOT to require tests, I strongly recommend having scores if it's safe and possible.
See some of the ways that your student can use scores in ADDITION to admissions in our post above!🎓
Was that helpful? Still have questions? Ask me in the comments below or send me a DM!
