As summer heats up, swimming is a great way to keep cool while staying active outdoors. As many families head to pools, lakes, rivers, and beaches, it's important to take precautions to keep children of all ages safe around water.
After birth defects, drowning is the leading cause of death in children 1-4 years old. Surprisingly, adolescents 15-19 years old have the 2nd highest fatal drowning rate out of any age group.
Here are some water safety facts and tips to help your children have a safe and fun time this summer:
⦁ Every child should learn how to swim. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swim lessons as a layer of protection against drowning that can begin as early as 1 year old.
⦁ Most drownings in kids 4 and under happen in home swimming pools at times when children were not expected to be at or in the pool. If you have a pool at home, make sure you have multiple layers of protection including pool alarms, covers, and fences.
⦁ Contrary to what is often portrayed in movies and TV shows, real drowning often happens quickly and silently without the victim frantically splashing or calling out for help.
⦁ Never leave a young child alone or in the care of another child while in or near water, not even for a moment. If you have to leave the area and don't have another adult to watch the child at all times while you are away, take the child with you.
⦁ Always have a water watcher- an adult who will pay constant attention to children swimming or playing in or near water, even if the children know how to swim. If you are the water watcher, put away your cell phone and avoid other activities and distractions.
⦁ Always use life jackets when in, on or near natural bodies of water, such as lakes or rivers. Blow-up water wings, toys, rafts and air mattresses should not be used as life jackets or personal flotation devices.
⦁ Never swim alone in open water. Ocean swimming should only be allowed when a lifeguard is on duty.
⦁ Never let your child swim in canals or any fast-moving water.
⦁ Teach your child about rip currents. If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore until you escape the current, and then swim back to shore.

Good news! We will be able to see more of our wonderful patients very soon! As the governor of Maryland is now allowing elective healthcare, we will resume doing preventative checkups for all ages starting on Monday, May 11!
For the safety of our patients and staff, we will continue to only see well patients for routine checkups in the office and ask illness screening questions. Upon arrival, we ask that you wait in your car and call us at 301-393-2600 (select option 1) to check in. We will notify you when an exam room is open and then have you enter the office. Only one parent/guardian will be permitted to accompany the patient to their appointment. Everyone entering the office should continue to wear a face mask according to state requirements. We will continue to check temperatures for all patients and parents/guardians upon office arrival. For your safety, we will continue to thoroughly clean exam rooms after each patient encounter.
For all other appointment types, we will continue to offer virtual visits. If your provider feels that a health concern requires an in-person visit, we may be able to offer in-person assessments at the end of the day starting at 4pm. For these visits, we ask that you remain in your car and the provider will come outside to your car to see the patient. Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms will still be directed to call the Meritus COVID-19 Care Line at 301-790-9170.
We encourage everyone to stay safe, wash your hands often, maintain social distance, and wear a face mask in public. If you have any questions, feel free to call us 301-393-2600.
Our office hours are still 8-5. We are currently seeing checkups 2 and under as per AAP. Our nurses are still answering any questions or concerns that you may have. We are also offering virtual visits with the provider if needed. We will see sick patients at the end of the day at the provider's discretion. The providers have actually been going out to the parent's car to look in ears, swab throats and examine as needed. This is an effort to try and prevent the spread of the virus. Call if you have any questions or concerns. We want to continue to provide quality care as well as keeping everyone safe.
