๐At Arancia, I typically see patients who are in a chronic state of pain and discomfort. Many of them have been through traumas and also have underlying health conditions.
๐คธ๐ปโโ๏ธWhen I hear patients describe themselves as being BENDY or Hypermobile, having a lot of flexibility, I always make sure to assess their joints to see how much excess motion exists at each joint.
๐คธ๐ปโโ๏ธMany times patients come in complaining of tightness and muscle pain. They are used to getting deep tissue sports massages and say that it feels good in the moment, but doesn't usually last and often they experience worse pain after.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
๐Sadly, I cringe when I heard this type of thing because what some massage therapists are not aware of are other underlying reasons why someone may have excess muscle tightness. What overtly looks and feels like a tight muscle ๐ช๐ป that needs massaging is actually a spasm that often help hold the joints in place when someone is truly hypermobile.
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ
๐คธ๐ปโโ๏ธJoint hypermobility is also a feature of a rare, inherited, more significant medical condition called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), which is characterized by weakness of the connective tissues of the body. Most people donโt consider that they are weak, rather than feel very โtightโ. Naturally they think massage and stretching will help loosen up their tight muscles. Remember that muscles that are in spasm are not tight, they are weak and in spasm to help stabilize surrounding joints. Once you massage and stretch it will feel good temporarily however, after you walk around the joint becomes even more hypermobile now that you have taken the spasm away that was supporting the joint. The pain cycle will return since the joints are more hyper mobile and the surrounding musculature will go back into spasm.
๐คLong story short, itโs best to get a differential diagnosis before trying to stretch endlessly. In most cases, these patients need to strengthen the muscles ๐ช๐ป which will help decrease the muscle spasms. Exercise is key hereโญ๏ธ
