The AVECCC Doctors and staff understand that losing a furry family member can be a difficult and emotional event. We want to do anything we can to ease our clients' sorrow. We have recently updated and improved our comfort room to allow owners to spend time in a comfortable and inviting environment when making the difficult decision to say goodbye to their pet. We have soft lighting, a couch, treats, blankets, and pillows to sit next to your pet to make the most of your precious moments together. While euthanasia is the most difficult part of pet ownership, we hope that that we can ease that pain as much as possible.
Working during COVID has presented our team with some new challenges. Our team members are doing their best to follow safety protocols and wear appropriate PPE. We had to share this photo of AVECCC technicians, Kylee and Melinda, as they shared a "social distance" hug.

Meet Scout. This 3-year-old, Boxer mix presented at AVECCC due to acute onset vomiting. Our team did x-rays and were concerned that there may be foreign material in her small intestines. Otter is an adorable (and very food motivated) Corgi puppy. Jack was outside playing with his toy when came inside, drank water, then started gagging. He then vomited about 4 times and started scratching his face. His owner took quick action and rushed him to AVECCC when she noticed Jack's face starting to swell. Have you ever heard of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE)? This procedure can be performed on pets who ingest large amounts of a toxic substance or medication and helps by removing plasma from a patient in order to clear substances that may be present in the plasma and harmful to that patient. Dean is a fighter! About 4 months ago, Dean's heart stopped during his standard neuter procedure. Later that same evening, he was in a car accident and he arrested again. The owners rushed him to AVECCC where our team revived him using CPR. He required intensive care in our hospital for multiple days. Dean suffered some neurologic deficits and his medical recovery has been a slow one. His family has had to help Dean relearn how to eat, drink and even walk. We received a wonderful thank you email from Dean's mom with some GREAT news that he is eating and walking on his own now! Keep up the good work. We're rooting for you Dean (and family).

It's St. Patrick's Day and this means some special vet wrap art for the kitty named El Jefe. This sweet 6-month-old cat fractured her distal tibia/fibula. The AVECCC team gave her some pain medication and placed a colorful (good luck) splint to keep her leg stabilized. Her mom said that she is recovering from surgery and is expected to go home today or tomorrow. We wish her well as she heals from her injury!

Diesel is a 4 year old, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, who presented at Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center because he was very lethargic and did not want to eat. After running some diagnostics, it was determined that Diesel has Addison's disease. He spent 4 days in our ICU where he was on IV fluids and medication to neutralize the effects of potassium on the heart. Diesel recovered from his Addisonian crisis and was able to go home to his loving family. We received a note from Diesel's family that made our day. We truly appreciate kind words and notes of appreciation about our dedicated and compassionate team. 🐾 Click on this link to learn more about this disease: https://buff.ly/3rp7pdI

Have you ever heard of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE)? This procedure can be performed on pets who ingest large amounts of a toxic substance or medication and helps by removing plasma from a patient in order to clear substances that may be present in the plasma and harmful to that patient. Grady is an adorable, curious, 2-year-old Dachshund who got into a bottle of Advil at home. His toxic ingestion put him at high risk for renal failure and other neurologic deficits without aggressive medical treatment. Grady's parents authorized the AVECCC ICU team to perform TPE as part of his treatment plan. After a couple of days of TLC in our hospital, Grady was able to go home with his family.
