Amazing artist Friday! Njideka Akunyili Crosby, originally from Nigeria, relocated to America where she graduated from Swarthmore College, earned her MFA from Yale University, and was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant in 2017. Her work draws from her personal experiences and the intersection of Nigerian culture and Western pop culture. She primarily uses a process of layering photographs and prints mixed with the uses of acrylic, charcoal, and fabrics to create her pieces.

e recently picked up multiple pieces of art from a home that had a severe water loss. Although none of the pieces came in direct contact with the water, each suffered water related damage such as warping of frames, stretcher bars, mats and prints due to the high humdity in the building. Huguette Caland was a Lebanese artist known for her paintings, sculptures and work with textiles that explored feminist themes. She was the daughter of the first president of postcolonial Lebanon, and did not begin her studies till her 30s at the American University in Beirut. She had studios in Paris, Venice and Los Angeles, and returned to Beruit in 2013, the same year she suffered neurological problems which left her unable to paint. At our location, we can safely say this is the most popular artist among all the pieces that we restore. According, to his company there is a Kinkade hanging in 1 out of every 20 American homes. He became a born again Christian in 1980 and many of his works depict churches or contain Bible versus. He trademarked the moniker "painter of light," and has said, “With whatever talent and resources I have, I'm trying to bring light to penetrate the darkness many people feel.” Having painted over 1,000 pieces in his lifetime, he passed away in 2012 at the age of 54.

Our artists just finished the recovery of 40 pieces of fire damaged art from a client in Cottonwood. Some new pieces we hadn't seen before, scale model trains that were hand made by our client and sold around the world! Amazing artist Friday! Anke Eilergerhard is a Berlin-based artist and sculptor that created pieces that are not only visually stimulating, but also charge your sense of touch, taste, and smell. Using silicone, she uses a piping bag to achieve the airy look of a frosted cake, mixed with well known objects like tea cups and other plateware. In her work she is addressing feminism, luxury, lust and elegance. Eilergerhard has said, "For me, the detail of the whipped cream is the perfect shape and a piece of heaven on earth."

Our artists just finished the recovery of 40 pieces of fire damaged art from a client in Cottonwood. Some new pieces we hadn't seen before, scale model trains that were hand made by our client and sold around the world! Amazing artist Friday! Tunji Adeniyi-Jones is a painter who draws from both his Yoruban heritage and his London upbringing. When asked how he sees the West African influences in his art, he stated, " The figures depicted in my paintings are very alluring and striking. Many of their poses invoke a sense of performance or dance. There are thousands of different dialects spoken across West Africa but one of the most unifying languages is communicated through the body. This language of dance and performance transcends all cultural boundaries and my intention is to charge the bodies in my paintings with this same vigour."

Here is an amethyst that was broken in half by a fall. We were able to reattach the two pieces and fill in the missing areas of the crystal's outside coating. Short of giving it a sound or moon bath, the piece is restored!

This oil painting from the 1870s came to us with improper repair work on a tear, in need of a varnish removal, and dripping paint from "shoddy" frame repair with the painting still inside. You can see a closeup of the repair which had not been correctly filled, patched, or in-painted. After the varnish removal, you can see the artist's true colors, and with filling and in-painting this piece has been properly restored.

Amazing artist Friday! Albert Bierstadt (January 7, 1830 – February 18, 1902) was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was a young child. He began to paint with oils in his early 20s, and briefly went back to Germany to study painting, returning in his late 20s to teach before becoming a painter full-time. He is best known for his art depicting the American West; joining several journeys of Western Expansions. His paintings enabled Americans to see the some of these landmarks for the first time.

When we recovered this piece from a home that experience fire damage, it was left with an ombre effect on the painting, mainly effecting the sky. It can be a tricky and slow process to making sure to be thorough when it comes a painting that uses the impasto technique of thick application of paint; cleaning all the nooks and crannies while being delicate when there are areas of light paint application. Using our proprietary solvents, we were able to turn what looks like a high pollution day back into a sunny one.

He is an American glass sculptor, gradating from RISD with a Master of Fine Arts degree, and being awarded a Fullbright Fellowship, he later cofounded the Pilchuck Glass School and founded the HillTop Artists program. Later in life he was involved in several accidents which left him blinded in his left eye and with a dislocated shoulder, resulting in him in hiring others to execute his ideas and sketches. He has had exhibitions all over the United States and the world.

Here is a before and after of a painting that experienced a home fire which resulted in damage from soot, and presumably water used to extinguish the flames. This resulted in streaks of a liquid with an unknown composition. Often when we recover pieces from a home incident, it can be covered in mystery substances which have to be tested to see how it can be removed to restored the artwork. We were able to restore this ballerina to its original condition.

Amazing artist Friday! Dextra Quotskuyva was born in Arizona, and is a fifth generation Hopi potter. She created her pieces using the traditions set by her ancestors, but adding her own creative interpretations; she sourced the clays from her reservation and the paints from local bee-weed plants and native clay slips. She received the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts Lifetime Achievement award in 2004, and passed away in 2019 at the age of 92.

Living and working in Phoenix, Papay Solomon is a Liberian-American artist known for his hyperrealistic paintings that marry his experience in America with his African heritage. He relocated to the U.S. with his family at the age of 14 after his mother (pregnant with him) fled Guinea due to the First Liberian Civil War, then relocating to refugee camps in Gueckedou. He has been exhibited in galleries across the country and has his first solo exhibit in 2020.

One of the most interesting parts of receiving an older piece of art is the possibility of seeing the maintenance done over the years. When recently working on recovering a frame, we were able to recover this variety of nails and screws from the frame that no longer served the piece. Amazing artist Friday! Dextra Quotskuyva was born in Arizona, and is a fifth generation Hopi potter. She created her pieces using the traditions set by her ancestors, but adding her own creative interpretations; she sourced the clays from her reservation and the paints from local bee-weed plants and native clay slips. She received the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts Lifetime Achievement award in 2004, and passed away in 2019 at the age of 92.

Here is a before and after of a painting that experienced a home fire which resulted in damage from soot, and presumably water used to extinguish the flames. This resulted in streaks of a liquid with an unknown composition. Often when we recover pieces from a home incident, it can be covered in mystery substances which have to be tested to see how it can be removed to restored the artwork. We were able to restore this ballerina to its original condition.

Living and working in Phoenix, Papay Solomon is a Liberian-American artist known for his hyperrealistic paintings that marry his experience in America with his African heritage. He relocated to the U.S. with his family at the age of 14 after his mother (pregnant with him) fled Guinea due to the First Liberian Civil War, then relocating to refugee camps in Gueckedou. He has been exhibited in galleries across the country and has his first solo exhibit in 2020.
