Breast cancer screening allows for detection of breast cancers before they are palpable. This means cancers are smaller and are easier to treat. St. Joseph Health - Sonoma County is proud to provide the latest technology available, providing a more comfortable experience, improving breast cancer detection and decreasing the number of times you will be asked to come back for additional imaging.
Tomosynthesis, sometimes referred to as 3-D mammography, is available to our patients at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma outpatient imaging centers. Tomosynthesis detects 40% more invasive cancers than traditional mammograms – including very small tumors at an earlier stage. Learn more here: http://provhealth.org/6180G2JSI

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we're bringing you weekly facts to stay informed!
Did you know...
• Lumpectomy has the same survival rate as a mastectomy.
• At the time of your mammogram at Santa Rosa Memorial a risk assessment will be performed to identify women at high risk for breast cancer and potentially at risk for a genetic mutation.
• Survival from breast cancer is the same, irregardless of how the breast cancer is surgically removed.
• Hormone replacement therapy after menopause can keep mammograms "dense" which makes it harder to detect breast cancers.
• The biggest risk for developing breast cancer is getting older.
• The radiation exposure from mammograms is extremely low and not dangerous.
• Screening mammograms can often detect breast cancer 5 years before you will be able to feel it.
• If you have breast cancer in one breast, the risk of having breast cancer in the other breast, in most instances, is extremely low.

We're excited to feature this week - Stephanie, our patient access representative for our Cardiology office in Humboldt.
"Hello, my name is Stephanie, and I am a Patient Access Representative at SJHMG Cardiology. I have been with Cardiology for 1 year. I truly enjoy my job, and the people I get to serve daily. I am originally from San Diego and moved to Humboldt in 1986. My husband and I have 3 beautiful children and love to go on hikes and beach walks in our spare time. We moved from Fortuna in 2001 to Mckinleyville, I have worked several jobs in McKinleyville as well as serving on the Mckinleyville Chamber Board of Director for 2 years. I love the community we live in and serve. I am very grateful to be serving this wonderful community!
As we get to the end of October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, please remember to stay informed and get your yearly mammogram screenings.
Did you know...
• Each woman's breast cancer is treated with an individual and personalized approach.
• Breast cancers are treated differently in different women based on lots of different characteristics.
• Breast cancer is extremely slow-growing.
• Mammograms are the best screening tool to detect breast cancer for most women.
• Women with a lifetime risk of developing breast cancer greater than 20% have the option to add MRI screening to mammographic screening.
• If you are screened with breast MRI, it is still very important to have your mammograms yearly.

We're excited to feature this week - Jessica I., one of our medical assistants at our ENT office in Napa.
"My favorite thing about what I do is being able to interact and form a bond with our patients. Whether I see them less than a handful of times, see them routinely (since we're a specialty office), or even speak on the phone, it's nice to know that just a 5-10 minute conversation could have a lasting impact and I think that's how I remember most of them. While any job could be stressful, our patients is what keeps me going and I'm grateful. While I'm from and have grown up in Vallejo, I'm happy to serve the Napa community to aid in providing the best care that we can. When I'm not working, I enjoy spending my time with my significant other and our French Bulldog, Jax."
