As we continue our Black History Month series, we're highlighting Claudette Colvin this week. While most people are familiar with Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, 9 months before, Claudette Colvin was the first to boycott bus segregation policies.
Colvin was 15 when, on the way home from school on March 2, 1955, she refused to give up her seat to a white person. She was arrested and charged for her actions.
Colvin challenged the law in court and was 1 of the 4 plaintiffs in Browder vs. Gayle. On June 5, 1956, the court ruled that segregation on buses was unconstitutional as it violated the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

This week for our Black History Month series we're highlighting Jane Bolin, the first Black woman to become a judge in the United States.
Bolin attended Wellesley College, where she was 1 of 2 Black freshmen. Despite the racism she faced, she graduated as one of the top students. While she was discouraged from pursuing a career in law due to a lack of opportunity for women of color, she still enrolled at Yale Law School. In 1931, Bolin became the first Black woman to earn a law degree from the prestigious school.
On July 22, 1939, she was sworn in as a judge and served on New York's Family Court for the next 40 years.
In this position, she changed segregationist policies in the system, including skin-color based assignments for probation officers.

As we wrap up our Black History Month series, we want to highlight poet, novelist, and playwright Langston Hughes. A leading figure during the Harlem Renaissance, his work is known for highlighting the highs and lows of the Black working-class.
When most American poets were writing obscure and esoteric poetry, Hughes was using language and themes familiar to people during that time. He was also among the first to use jazz rhythms and dialect to portray Black lives in his work.
He was the first Black American to earn a living from his writing and public lectures. In addition to his large volume of poetry, Hughes also wrote plays, novels, short stories, children's books, nonfiction works, and two autobiographies.
