About

ASPENPOINTE provides exceptional behavioral health care to our community, one patient at a time. Our continuum of care includes mental health and substance abuse services as well as career and education enhancement programs for individuals and families. As one of the largest nonprofits in Colorado Springs, ASPENPOINTE traces its roots back 140 years, when we were called the Springs Relief Society. That organization, which delivered coal, lumber and clothing to the needy, was the genesis of what today is one of the largest Medicaid providers in Colorado Springs. We collaborate with clergy, educators, employers, other health and human service organizations and the legal/criminal justice system in the Pikes Peak region to leverage our collective resources to better our community and the lives of its residents.

Thoughts have a major impact on emotions and behaviors. By focusing on positive thoughts, it can help improve mood and help with finding more effective coping strategies. • Identify unhelpful thoughts. They produce an emotional response of fear, worthlessness, and pessimism. • Identify alternative helpful thoughts. This shifts the emotional response to be reassured, competent, more hopeful, and optimistic. • Rehearse helpful thoughts. This may produce more helpful thinking, which can lead to a more positive and healthy emotional state. Visit www.aspenpointe.org/covidresponse, email CovidResponse@AspenPointe.org or call (719) 299-2996 for more helpful tips or to access confidential, free short term services.

During and after disasters, it can be difficult for people to get restful sleep. Many people experience trouble falling asleep, staying asleep and/or waking during the night. Below are three helpful tips to getting better sleep. • Calm your body and mind with soothing strategies such as breathing exercises, meditation, stretching, yoga, prayer, a bath, reading, writing/drawing, or listening to quiet music before bed. • Wake up at the same time every day, if possible. • Avoid nicotine, alcohol and caffeine after 4 pm. Here are three tips to Managing Reactions: • Describe the stressful situation and the reaction that is the most problematic. • List the skills that you can use to reduce the distressing reaction, such as journaling or talking to friends and family. • Practice implementing these skills in your daily routine and assess the effectiveness of the skill to find which skill(s) work best for you. Today is World Kindness Day! Showing a little act of kindness goes a long way in making someone’s (and your) day a little bit brighter. Normally I would suggest a smile and quick “hello” to those you encounter in your day, however, in the era of COVID, little acts of kindness look a little different. So, what are practical ways to show kindness in the middle of a pandemic? • Send a letter or uplifting text. • Check in on your friends and family over video. • Tip a little extra, or pay for the order behind you • Show yourself a little kindness – treat yourself to that latte, give yourself a little extra grace, go on a walk, take an extra minute to yourself. • Tell your kids you love them and you’re proud of them. • Practice empathy. • Share a positive story on social media. What did you do today to show kindness? #MakeKindnessVisible #WorldKindnessDay
