Often, when winter is upon us our motivation to exercise and eat healthy foods tend to plummet along with the temperature. Don't let the cooler weather hold you back from staying healthy! Make sure you eat nutritious meals, stay active, limit alcoholic beverages, and avoid smoking tobacco.
Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, is celebrated on the 11th day of the 11th month every year to thank, honor, and salute our heroes of the past, present, and future. Thank you for your service.
DON’T SKIP YOUR ANNUAL SIGHT-SAVING EXAM!
November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and it is also Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month. As a trusted trusted vision specialist, Dr. Leanne Whitaker wants to use this time to shine a spotlight on this debilitating and potentially sight-stealing disease. Most recent statistics report that diabetes affects more than 34 million people in the United States. That’s more than one in 10 people dealing with diabetes! And that’s a lot of eyes to protect!
Diabetic Eye Disease is a real threat to anyone who suffers from diabetes. There are several kinds of diabetic eye disease, but all of them have the potential to result in vision loss and even blindness. At Athens Eye Care Center, we care about you, your health, your eyes and your vision!
One of the best ways to give your eyes love is to get at least 7 - 9 hours of sleep a night. A good night’s rest keeps the eyes ready for the next day and can prevent eye spasms, dryness, itchiness, strain, and bloodshot eyes. It also prevents dark circles from appearing around the eyes — and let's be honest, who wants those?!
Why is it so important for diabetics to get a yearly eye exam? Not only does diabetes affect your body but it can also seriously damage your vision, potentially leading to vision loss. With the proper care, like getting a yearly dilated eye exam & maintaining a healthy diet, you can help keep your eyes healthy! Contact us to schedule your yearly dilated eye exam.
We live in a world flooded with digital devices. As a result, you may be starting to experience digital eye strain, which makes your eyes feel sore, tired, watery, and/or dry. To prevent this from occurring, follow the 20-20-20 rule!
This year’s theme for World Diabetes Day is, “The Nurse and Diabetes”. Nurses help support people living with all types of health concerns especially those that have diabetes. They face several challenges and education is so important to help equip nurses with the skills they need to help support them.

Wash your hands with soap and water before handling contact lenses. Place 1 lens in the palm of your hand, add a generous amount of solution, and gently rub with your finger for about 10 seconds in order to remove any buildup on the lens. Then, rinse the lens with solution. Repeat with the 2nd lens — and ta-da! They’re ready to wear!

Sleeping in contact lenses increases your risk for eye infections by six to eightfold as it prevents the eyes from getting the proper oxygen and hydration it needs to fight bacteria.
We’ve officially entered the holiday season! And you know what that means... toy giving and sharing is in full swing! However, every year, thousands of children suffer from toy-related eye injuries. Before purchasing toys for that special child in your life, take a moment to consider: “is this toy age-appropriate and safe?”

It’s time for your eye exam!
As you prepare to chef-it-up this holiday season, keep this in mind as you chop up your next onion! A cut onion releases a gas called Propanethiol S-oxide, and when mixed with certain enzymes in the onion, it creates a sulfur gas that irritates the eyes and triggers your tear glands. Here's a tip: keep your onion refrigerated! Cold onion doesn't release that chemical compound as easily as it would if it were warm.
Schedule your appointment before time runs out on your vision plan and flex spending benefits.

Experts don’t know why we close our eyes when sneezing but they’ve got a theory! When we sneeze, it’s a forceful, germ-filled burst of particles and microorganisms bursting from our nose and mouth when something irritates the mucous membranes of our nose or throat. Experts believe we close them to protect our eyes from particles entering while they’re exiting our nose and mouth!
