Dr. Alexander Shapsis is a caring and diligent gastroenterologist serving the community of Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Shapsis attended the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, where he earned his medical degree. He completed his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in gastroenterology at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Center and Mount Sinai Medical Center. He also holds a bachelor’s degree with a major in Biochemistry and a double Minor in Math and Philosophy from New York University.
Dr. Shapsis is a recognized and highly acclaimed physician educator. Being on an Advisory Board of many pharmaceutical companies (i.e. Gilead, AbbVie, Salix, Forrest Pharmaceuticals, and Janssen), Dr. Shapsis is one of a few leading National Speakers, promoting knowledge of gastrointestinal and liver disorders in the medical community at large. Dr. Shapsis was involved in the original studies of the novice technologically advanced treatment of gastroparesis (Enterra) - a Gastric stimulation device (a gastric pacemaker device), which has now helped thousands of patients worldwide. He has appeared on Channel 7 Health News Report (2006) during some of his collaborative pioneering work on Enterra.
His work on a rare and previously poorly described condition of an Acute Esophageal Necrosis now carries his name in describing the various stages of this disease (The Gurvits-Shapsis Classification of AEN - 2007).
Dr. Shapsis is an Internationally recognized and accomplished Endoscopist, as he performed the first successful implantation of a non-surgical endoscopic weight loss device - the Spatz-2 Intragastric Balloon in Latvia (EU) (Not an FDA approved devise).
