Playing his very 1st show at the opening of Warr Acres City Hall is #Oklahoma native, Vince Gill!!! Did you know❓❓❓ 🎵Vincent Grant Gill was born in Norman, Oklahoma in 1957!! 🎵His father was a banjo-playing judge and his mom a harmonica-playing homemaker, sounds like a great duo!! 🎵Encouraged by his parents, Vince learned to play guitar and banjo at an early age and, in rapid succession, picked up the fiddle, dobro, mandolin, and bass. 🎵A Grammy favorite, Vince has won TWENTY-ONE Grammys in all, for singing, songwriting, producing, and instrumental virtuosity. Gill hosted the CMA Awards every year from 1992–2003. He was CMA’s Entertainer of the Year in 1993 and 1994 and Male Vocalist of the Year from 1991 to 1995. 🏆🏆🏆 No other artist has won the Male Vocalist award in five consecutive years. Gill is the only songwriter to win Song of the Year four times. ***COMMUNITY HISTORY*** ***COMMUNITY: Glenpool, Oklahoma ***POPULATION: 10,808 ***SCHOOL SIZE: 2,789 ***SCHOOL MASCOT: Warriors ***LOCATION: 35.9554°N, 96.0089°W Glenpool, a Tulsa suburb, is located east of the junction of West 141st Street and U.S. Highway 75 in the southwestern quadrant of Tulsa County. Noted for its location near and its identity with one of the world's largest oil fields, Glenpool had its start after the Glenn Pool oil strike in 1905. Wildcatter Robert Galbreath arrived in Redfork, Indian Territory, on June 28, 1901. By 1902 he had procured a lease near the Sue A. Bland well. While working in the Red Fork fields, he believed that there was a larger field to be tapped further south. In summer 1901 he met with Robert Glenn and noted a limestone ridge that was soaked in oil. Galbreath was convinced of the field's potential. On April 22, 1905, he procured a lease from Robert and Ida E. Glenn for 160 acres. By October 1905 drilling was underway, and on November 22, 1905, they struck oil at a depth of 1,481 feet. The Glenn Pool Field was one of the largest oil finds in the Southwest. By 1906 twelve families clustered in a settlement originally called Glenn. That year the Midland Valley Railroad constructed a line between the settlement and Jenks in order to transport the oil to outside markets. By 1907 the area's population had grown to approximately three thousand. In 1907 R. J. and Pearl Barber Stewart deeded approximately forty acres of land near the present intersection of U.S. Highway 75 and West 141st Street to F. Markle and M. T. Self. They platted the first lots and on January 31, 1908, renamed the town Glenpool. A post office was also established on that date. John Burt, Sr., from Oklahoma City, purchased the remainder of the allotment and the majority of the platted lots that formed the original townsite. By 1908 Glenpool's first school enrolled two hundred fifty children in the newly formed district. It had the distinction of being Oklahoma's richest school district. By 1909–10 the city had an estimated five hundred inhabitants. Early-day businesses included the Rumrill State Bank, the Ridgeway Hotel, telephone and telegraph providers, restaurants, stores, and other businesses. In 1916 the Midland Valley Railroad extended its line from Glenpool to Kiefer, another shipping point. Rail service from Glenpool to Jenks and Kiefer was abandoned on February 12, 1936. In 1920 the first federal census for Glenpool reported 428 individuals. Population declined until 1960. Thus, the 1930, 1940, and 1950 censuses indicated 310, 284, and 280 persons, respectively. Despite this drop in population Glenpool continued to have ties to the oil industry. However, by 1932 Tidal Oil Company and Moon Gas Company were the only major oil businesses listed in an Oklahoma Department of Labor directory. After World War II building booms occurred in the 1950s and the 1970s. Glenpool's population rose to 353 in 1960. In 1970 numbers had more than doubled to 770. By 1980 the 1970s oil boom had pushed the population to 2,706, more than tripling the 1970 figure. Glenpool has continued to grow, and in 1990 the population hit 6,688. In 2000 the city boasted 8,123 inhabitants. Major employers included Champagne Metals and the Glenpool School District. Except for Glenpool's small retailers, restaurants, and service providers, Tulsa businesses provided the majority of the employment base for Glenpool's workers. By 2010 the town had grown to 10,808 inhabitants. On November 22, 2005, Glenpool celebrated the centennial of the Glenn Pool discovery. The city annually holds a Black Gold Days festival, with arts and crafts, concerts, a carnival, a parade, and other events. At the beginning of the twenty-first century Glenpool maintained a council-manager form of town government. Written by: Carl E. When the USS Oklahoma was built in 1916, it was the largest and most advanced ship in the US Navy. The USS Oklahoma needed 2,166 sailors and marines to function properly, and could travel 20,000 miles without refueling. It weighed 11,000 tons and carried ten 14-inch guns. The guns on battleships are rated by the diameter of the ammunition used. A 14-inch gun has shells that are 14 inches in diameter and weigh about 1,400 pounds each. That means that each shell fired by one of these guns weighed about the same as three motorcycles. Each of the Oklahoma's guns could fire almost TWELVE MILES!!! On the morning of December 7, 1941, the USS Oklahoma (BB-37) received the brunt of the initial attacks on Pearl Harbor. Struck by multiple torpedoes, the ship capsized. Many men were trapped inside or killed by flying debris. Except for the USS Arizona, the USS Oklahoma lost the most casualties of all ships in the harbor that day. Today is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. We honor the 2,403 United States citizens who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. In 1953, 10-year-old Oklahoman Gayla Peevey sang the novelty hit: 🦛🦛🦛 "I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas."🦛🦛🦛 This novelty hit led to a statewide fund drive in #Oklahoma in which children donated dimes to buy and bring a hippopotamus to the Oklahoma City Zoo. Enough money was raised to purchase a hippopotamus and that hippo arrived in a crate on Christmas Eve, they named her Mathilda. As the clock strikes midnight tonight in #Oklahoma, voices all over the world will resurrect the centuries-old tradition of singing “Auld Lang Syne” to say goodbye to the passing year. But what does "Auld Lang Syne" mean?? 🎼"Auld Lang Syne" literally translates to ‘old long since’ or 'time gone by' and is about remembering the good old days. 🎼“Auld Lang Syne” was written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788 and is thought to have been based on a Scottish folk song. 🎼The song’s simple and nostalgic melody made it popular at home and abroad. It was adapted as a soul song by Patti Labelle and there is even a rock-and-roll version by Jimmy Hendrix. Cheers to a Happy New Year and all the "time gone by" as we welcome in 2021!! AtLink Services would like to wish you a safe, prosperous and #connected New Year! #AtLinkServices #AuldLangSyne #HappyNewYear2021 #RobertBurns

Can you believe that the world’s first cell phone was launched in 1983! 📱📱📱 It was the Motorola DynaTAC 800x, priced at around $4,000, it only lasted 30 minutes before dying, took 10 hours to charge and was the size of a foot-long sub from Subway!! Despite the phone’s large size, it was still considered to be the most portable telephone ever made. For the first time in history, a human being could call someone without the constraints of wires or portable phone holders. Todays modern cell phones are quite a bit different, weighing in around 7 ounces and small enough to carry around in your pocket. There are approximately 3.5 billion smartphone users around the world, 77% of Americans have smartphones and 47% of US smartphone users say they couldn’t live without their device. #Funfacts for this lazy Sunday morning! ***COMMUNITY HISTORY*** ***COMMUNITY: Cromwell, Oklahoma ***POPULATION: 286 ***SCHOOL SIZE: 240 ***SCHOOL MASCOT: Butner Eagles ***LOCATION: 35.340027°N, 96.457248°W Located in northeastern Seminole County, Cromwell is situated on State Highway 56, one mile south of State Highway 99A. Muskogee oilman Joe I. Cromwell bought land near the Bruner Number One oil well, in the Greater Seminole Field and platted the original township in 1923. The oil-boom town exploded to a population of thousands in a matter of weeks. A post office was established on May 17, 1924. The lawless community soon earned the nickname "Cromwell the Wicked," and legendary lawman William "Bill" Tilghman was asked to come out of retirement at age seventy to establish law and order. During the 1920s approximately 150 businesses sold illegal moonshine whiskey and narcotics to the surrounding area. A drive to shut down these establishments caused the permanent closing of approximately seventy. However, the illegal drug trade was still embedded in the community because Wiley Lynn, a federal revenue agent, was linked to mobster Arnold Killian. Drugs were flown in from Mexico and dropped outside of town to be picked up and distributed by local moonshiners. On November 1, 1924, Lynn, accompanied by brothel owner Rose Lutke, drove into Cromwell and parked across the street from Ma Murphy's dance hall and café. Lynn discharged his pistol in the middle of the street, bringing Tilghman and Deputy Hugh Sawyer out of the café. Tilghman grabbed Lynn's wrist and pressed his own handgun into Lynn's ribs. Tilghman instructed Sawyer to remove Lynn's gun. As soon as the gun was removed from Lynn's hand, Tilghman released his hold on him. Lynn then retrieved another handgun from his jacket pocket, fired, and mortally wounded Tilghman. Shortly after Tilghman's death a fire burned the business district. With the oil boom declining, only a few legitimate businesses and churches were rebuilt to serve a surrounding agricultural community. In 1930 population stood at 249 and peaked at 451 in 1940. At the turn of the twenty-first century Cromwell had 265 residents, and in 2010 the number rose to 286. The Bill Tilghman Celebration was held annually on the second Saturday in October, and a marble marker in the city park commemorated the location where the lawman paid the ultimate price for Cromwell's citizens. 🐊🐊🐊 The blast of cold weather this past week made the act of crawling out to bask in the sun a poor choice for Oklahoma alligators. Did you know? 🐊In freezing temperatures in southeastern Oklahoma these cold-blooded creatures will go into a hibernation-like behavior called brumation. 🐊Brumation allows the alligators to slow their heart rate and metabolism, entering a state of inactivity. 🐊The alligators will stay awake while they brumate and will occasionally need to drink. 🐊Alligators were recently seen in photos from Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s David Arbour lifting their snouts above the frozen surface of the cold water. It’s a technique called “icing” or “snorkeling,” and it helps the alligators breathe properly. 🐊 Arbour wrote on Facebook the alligators from the Red Slough Wildlife Management Area will survive the freezing temperatures as long as they maintain an air hole so they can breath. Thank goodness these Oklahoma creatures have mastered the art of keeping their head above water! Have a great day Oklahoma! #AtLinkServices #OklahomaWeather #SaturdayVibes #HeadAboveWater #Oklahomagators #Alligators #RuralOklahoma #OklahomaParks

***COMMUNITY HISTORY*** NAME: Wetumka POPULATION: 1282 LOCATION: 35.2376N 96.2417W SCHOOL SIZE: 425 SCHOOL MASCOT: Chieftains HISTORY: “Located in northern Hughes County, Wetumka is situated slightly north of State Highway 9 on U.S. Highway 75 and approximately fifteen miles northeast of Holdenville, the county seat. Originally located in the Creek Nation, Indian Territory, Wetumka was named for the former Creek town of Wetumpka in Alabama. Wetumka is a Creek word meaning "tumbling water." Before the Civil War (1861–65), the Creek organized the Wetumka Indian Baptist Church. Thomas H. Scales, an Indian trader, was appointed the community's first postmaster on February 1, 1881. He and D. M. Benson operated general stores. In the early 1880s William Robinson, Dave Barnett, David Benson, and Robert Carr managed ranches near the settlement. “Between 1900 and 1901 the St. Louis, Oklahoma and Southern Railway (later the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway) erected a line from Sapulpa through Wetumka to the Red River. As the town developed, it served as a shipping point for cotton, corn, pecans, and livestock. By 1909 it supported three banks, two cotton gins, three blacksmith shops, two liveries, and a tin shop. Early-day newspapers included the Wetumka News-Herald, the Wetumka News, the Wetumka Herald, and the Wetumka Gazette. In July 1912 a two-story structure, costing fifteen thousand dollars, was completed to house a city hall and a meeting place for the Masonic lodge. With the advent of the automobile, good-roads enthusiasts in Wetumka in 1915 decided that a one-cent gasoline tax should be assessed to create revenue for improving roads. By 1918 the town supported four cotton gins, a mill and elevator, a wagonyard, an ice company, and a water and light company. “The Wetumka oil field opened in 1919. Drilling activity around the town brought an influx of workers, causing the population temporarily to reach approximately four thousand. Dirt and gravel roads were hastily laid out to accommodate traffic to the oil fields. Streets through the business district were paved. The flurry of activity prompted the railroad to construct a large freight house in February, and a three-story, brick hotel was erected in April 1925. The following year two rooms were added to the school building, and additional teachers were hired. Because the population exceeded two thousand, Wetumka citizens sent the governor a petition requesting designation as a city of the "first class." Gov. Jack C. Walton signed the proclamation on May 21, 1923, and an election was held on June 26 to elect a mayor, a city marshal, and council members. “In the 1930s oil and cotton dominated Wetumka's economy. Five cotton gins and sixteen petroleum companies were in operation. In the mid-1930s workers at a nearby Civilian Conservation Corps camp provided much-needed assistance in soil conservation. City amenities included nine churches, a park, a lake, and a junior college. As cotton production declined through the next decade, only three gins operated in the 1940s. Railey Manufacturing Company provided employment to workers who crafted wood flooring and doors. Municipal plants provided water and electricity, Oklahoma Natural Gas supplied gas, and Southwestern State Telephone furnished phone service. A prisoner of war camp for German prisoners, erected during World War II, closed in December 1945. The municipally owned Wetumka General Hospital opened in March 1960. In March 1973 a municipal complex opened to replace city hall, which had been destroyed by fire on November 13, 1971. By the 1970s all cotton gins were defunct. “Through the years children received an education at various facilities. On September 1, 1881, the Levering Manual Labor Mission School, under the auspices of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and partially supported by the Creek Nation, opened to provide education for Creek children. By 1902 Wetumka public school had an enrollment of 261 and employed three teachers and a principal. In November 1938 classes were held in churches and the National Guard Armory after a fire destroyed the high school building. Work started on a new facility on the same site, using federal Works Progress Administration funding. At the turn of the twenty-first century the Wetumka school system offered grades prekindergarten to twelve and enrolled 484. The Wes Watkins Technology Center, opened in 1992, provided vocational-technical training. At 1907 statehood Wetumka had a population of 300. Three years later it had declined to 231. The discovery of oil in 1919 caused the population to dramatically increase to 1,422 in 1920 and 2,153 in 1930. Population peaked at 2,340 in 1940. From 1950 to 1970 the number of residents declined from 2,025 to 1,687. A slight increase to 1,725 was reported in 1980. However, the next decade brought a decrease to 1,427. “With 1,451 residents at the turn of the twenty-first century, Wetumka had a council-manager form of government. The weekly Hughes County Times published there provided news. Citizens continued to celebrate the annual Suckers' Day event, that originated in 1950 after a "confidence man" took money from the townspeople for tickets to a circus that never came to town. The U.S. Census counted Wetumka's 2010 population as 1,282 persons. The Levering Mission (NR 74001662) and the Wetumka National Guard Armory (NR 88001390) were listed in the National Register of Historic Places.” All information gathered from the US Census Bureau, Oklahoma Historical Society. Henryetta Lake is looking good from 220 Feet! It takes strength, finesse, guts, and perseverance to climb towers everyday, and in Oklahoma you climb in every condition known to man. Being a tower climber means climbing towers at freezing temperatures, in 100 degree heat, and everything in between. When they are climbing a 400 foot tower they can’t just climb down for a cup of coffee or to warm their hands. We want to say thank you to our dedicated climbing crew for weathering this crazy Oklahoma climate. We couldn’t do it without you! #AtLinkServices #RuralOklahoma #Keepingyouconnected #Network #HenryettaOklahoma #Tower #TowerClimbers #Oklahoma #Oklahomaweather #Lineofsight #RuralRevolution #Thatsmyjob #ThisisOklahoma
Rain, rain, don’t go away. ☔️☔️☔️ Why? Because a wet, gloomy day is the perfect time to do a rainy day road trip. One of the greatest mysteries on the backroads of Oklahoma is the infamous “Magnetic Hill” in Springer, Oklahoma. "Magnetic Hill" is located on Pitt Road in Springer, not far from Ardmore. Drive to this rural road, stop your car at the bottom of the hill and put it in neutral, then feel a force "pull" you and the car up the hill. Many cyclists have reported this strange phenomenon also happening with their bikes. Whether caused by a magnetic force or an optical illusion, this is something you have to see and feel for yourself. ☔️☔️☔️ Oklahoma is full of so many great surprises! Stay dry, stay safe and have a great weekend. #AtLinkServices #RuralOklahoma #SpringerOklahoma #OnlyinOklahoma #ThisisOklahoma #Oklahomabackroads #DirtroadsofOklahoma #Oklahomasidestops #Oklahomadaytrips
