In the upcoming new LEGO City Main Square set, one of the Minifigure is wearing a hearing aid. Again these may not seem like a big deal, but for the hundreds of young people who wear hearing aids, it’s massive. It’s a small way of removing the stigma wrongly attached to the conceived nature of being ‘different’.
Kids use toys to escape into fantastical worlds. They become a superhero, race car driver, vet, scientist and much more, through the toys they play with. But for those who are considered a little ‘different’ to others, they may find it hard to feel they are truly reflected by what they see on TV, in books, movies or the toys they play with. Having Minifigures in wheelchairs or sporting a hearing aid may not seem like much, but for the kids (and adults) who build LEGO sets featuring them, it’s an incredibly positive step. A step which shows no matter who you are, you can be anything.

Sunday story time: I had the pleasure of fitting a gentleman with hearing aids last year. He was in denial but agreed to come in to “make his family happy”. He was certain that he didn’t need hearing aids. I listened to his concerns and we decided that a set of demo aids was the best way for him to evaluate hearing aids without feeling pressured. He (and his family!) loved them, he purchased what was right for his needs, and he wears them faithfully.
His family recently moved to another state and he was concerned about how he would be able to keep up with his hearing loss and hearing aid maintenance. I reached out to my colleagues and found him an amazing audiologist who can continue his care in his new state.
The relationship is not about sales. It’s about caring for an individual’s needs, addressing their concerns, and making sure they are taken care of properly even if it isn’t in our office.
Never forget.

I want to share a story about why I am an audiologist and what motivates me in my pursuit to help those in our community.
What motivates me: the cost of hearing loss.
I’m not talking about money.
I’m talking about a time. ⏰
Money is considered a renewable resource. You can always find ways to make more money. We can not find ways to make more time.
What moments and conversations are you missing because of hearing loss?
How many dinners do you avoid?
How many social gatherings do you turn down?
How hard is it to communicate?
✨I'm in the business of helping those live their best life and take advantage of the time they have here on earth. That’s what motivates me.✨
What motivates you?

What is the difference between hearing and listening?
👂 Hearing: Acoustic access, the doorway to the brain. The actual function of a sound wave traveling through your ear canal, into your middle ear, and automatically activating the organ of hearing.
🧠 Listening: Attending to acoustic events with intentionality. When we listen we are using the prefrontal cortex- this area of your brain is not activated voluntarily.
Hearing must be made available before listening can be taught. Luckily, our office works with both!
I love Adam Savage - for Mythbusters and for the awareness he brings to hearing loss issues. The comments on the video are really nice to see, too. There are a lot of people who are truly helped by hearing aids and wish they acted sooner. It’s time to ditch the stigma. https://youtu.be/AEHsxb_rSAk

There is more and more research identifying the long term effects of hearing loss.

Contrary to popular belief there are several things you can do to help improve your cognition BEFORE your cognition becomes a concern. 👏
Hearing loss is one of them! Take your brain health seriously and have a hearing screening before years end! 💫

How many of you are starting to see leaves falling? 🍁
It’s unfortunately that time of year where we find ourselves doing yard work. 🧹
Do you use a leaf blower? Did you know that they can exceed 80-85 decibels? At that level, you can damage your hearing within 2 hours. 💥
Make sure to use hearing protection this fall!

One of the coolest things we do in the office is treat auditory processing disorder. It is such an incredible experience to watch someone excel where they once struggled.
“I must let you know, due to allergies I feel very congested today- I’m afraid it might affect my hearing test.”
Did you know that with a routine hearing evaluation I can tell if your hearing loss is caused by middle ear issues (congestion, fullness, middle ear fluid) or nerve loss in the inner ear?
Yup, that’s right! I have different ways of testing your hearing that allows me to figure out just where your hearing loss is occuring! 😊
Have you ever had a hearing test?

DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH
If you or someone you know has diabetes the likelihood of hearing loss multiplies by two. 😔
Just like high blood glucose can damage organs such as eyes and kidneys it can also damage the inner ear. Our inner ears are extremely sensitive to blood flow and even our eardrums include a network of small blood vessels!
If you or your loved one has diabetes a routine hearing evaluation should be a part of your yearly check ups!

💥STRESS💥
Did you know that stress can contribute to the level of your tinnitus?
👀
I like to refer to this as the snowball effect. If your stress gets worse, this may make your tinnitus worse, which then increases the likelihood that you aren’t sleeping well at night, which may contribute to your tinnitus getting even worse… which contributes to even more stress...so on and so on...
😥
At Audiology & Hearing Services of Charlotte, I want you to know we understand how debilitating tinnitus can become- or is.
✨We are here for you.✨
If tinnitus is affecting your life, please schedule an appointment. We pride ourselves on taking time to not only provide you with a thorough hearing evaluation but tinnitus education and treatment as well.

Did you know that treating your hearing loss with hearing aids can almost always helps reduce your perception of tinnitus? If you don't need hearing aids to treat an existing hearing loss, there are so many options to bring sound therapy into your treatment plan and offer relief.
😯
I actually have extensive training in tinnitus and have been treating tinnitus patients with TRT since 1998. In addition to being a TRT provider, this past week I completed an intensive tinnitus treatment specialization training with Royal Surrey hospital in the UK.
