Douglas Hidlay, MD, enjoys interventional radiology because he is able to solve problems and keep patients out of the hospital. These minimally invasive procedures take only a few minutes or short hours and patients can be back to their lives outside the hospital.

Scientists estimate that 9.3% of adults worldwide — 463 million people — live with diabetes. We celebrate World Diabetes Day every November 14 to honor the birthday of Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin in 1922. Since then, doctors have discovered that few things are more important in preventing and controlling diabetes than good nutrition. That’s one of the pillars of our partnership with the Allegheny Mountain Institute to develop a sustainable production farm that grows organic food for our patient meals, cafes, and catering services. Last year, the AMI farm produced 24,000 pounds of food as a way to empower our patients and community to make healthy food choices year-round. #WorldDiabetesDay2020 #insulin4all #diabetesawareness

We are more than doctors, nurses, and frontline workers. We are also parents, children, and neighbors who — every day — must confront a reality that many have chosen to ignore. Of the many lessons this pandemic has taught us, it has also reminded us of what we too often forget — though we are individuals, we are connected to one another in ways we often cannot see.

With 2020 finally behind us, we can all look forward to the new year with hope and optimism. Two COVID-19 vaccines are in the process of being distributed to frontline healthcare workers. Within months, these vaccines will be available to everyone who chooses to receive them. In the meantime, however, COVID-19 cases continue to rise in our area. Here are some of the most important things you need to know about how to take care of yourself and when to seek medical attention if you have tested positive for COVID-19.
Our community is going to need volunteers to help get everyone vaccinated. You don't have to be a nurse or a healthcare provider.
To become a Virginia Medical Reserve Corps volunteer you must first register in the Virginia Volunteer Health System (VVHS). They will provide a structure for registering volunteers, training on the vaccination process and connecting volunteers to community vaccine events. For more information or to apply, visit https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/mrc/apply-to-volunteer/.

Given the limited supply of vaccines currently available, health department vaccine clinics and vaccine distribution by community partners will be by appointment only at this time.
Be sure to follow Central Shenandoah Health District (CSHD) or visit their website for updates on local vaccine efforts https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/central-shenandoah/covid-19-vaccine-information/
We would like to note, if you are aged 65+ and want to sign up for the COVID-19 vaccine, please complete this Vaccination Survey https://redcap.vdh.virginia.gov/redcap/surveys/?s=WPLHWFN4DJ. By completing this survey, your name will be added to a queue to receive notification when a COVID-19 vaccine is available to you and provide you with information on how to register.
We thank everyone for your patience.
As of the end of the day yesterday, we've administered 4,461 doses of vaccine. It's important to know we are administering our entire allocation received from the state each week. No doses are discarded; the need for vaccine is greater than the current supply. As supply increases and when directed by Central Shenandoah Health District, we will expand the size of the clinics.
