We hope everyone had a great and safe holiday weekend! We wanted to be sure to share some of the fun festivities we had at the hospital, that included a costume and a pumpkin carving contest, for everyone to enjoy! Congratulations to our Halloween costume winners: Dr. McCutcheon for the best-coordinated costume as a fortune teller with a crystal ball and her magic 8-ball, Dr. Johnson for the most creative costume as a park ranger, and Rebecca for the funniest costume as "raining cats and dogs"! And also congratulations to Teresa for the most creative pumpkin carving submission, "Tick or Treat, Smell my Feet!" 😆
It's National Cat Day! Today we celebrate our feline friends - whether they like it or not! #nationalcatday
This sweet pup, Gordy, gave his owners quite a scare the other day when they came home to find a bottle of melatonin mostly eaten. Luckily, they checked the ingredient list and knew that xylitol (the very first ingredient) is toxic to dogs! They immediately rushed him to our emergency department where he began treatment to help stabilize his blood sugar. Xylitol is a natural sugar substitute found in many sugar-free foods and supplements (even some peanut butter!). Xylitol poisoning in dogs can cause a drop in blood sugar resulting in symptoms such as weakness, unsteadiness, shaking, and even seizures. It also has a negative effect on the liver. Gordy needed to be hospitalized for three days, before going home. We're so happy to see him feeling better and that his parents acted quickly!
We LOVE our patients! 💕 This sweet moment was captured after Betty Blue came in to see our surgery department for a rhinoplasty and staphylectomy (a trimming of the nose and soft palate) to help her breathe better! This type of surgery is often recommended for brachycephalic breeds, like Betty Blue, that are prone to difficult, obstructive breathing because of the shape of their head, muzzle, and throat.
Happy Veterans Day to all those who have served our country, both two and four-legged! We are forever grateful for all that you have done for us. 🇺🇸
November is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month and today is National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day! 🐕 What better day to share Dobson's story with you?! Dobson is a 10-year-old terrier mix who was diagnosed with multicentric B cell lymphoma in August of 2020. He has been seeing our new oncology doctor, Dr. Wittenberns for his chemotherapy treatments and is now in complete remission! 🎉 Dobson loved being hugged and petted while receiving his treatments and we are so excited for him! Lymphoma is one of the most common types of cancer in dogs and cats. It is a cancer of the lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) which are involved in normal immune system function. Chemotherapy is the mainstay treatment since lymphoma often impacts the lymph nodes and lymphoid organs in the entire body. Up to 95% of dogs treated with our most effective treatment protocols will go into remission. There are many treatment options for lymphoma which vary in response rate and duration of response, time commitment, side effects, and cost.

And the tally is in! We made our goal of recycling 500 lbs of plastic films and bags that would have otherwise made it to the landfill in 6 months! ♻️ For the month of October, we collected 189.29 lbs. for a total of 549.07 lbs of plastic films over the last 6 months. Thank you to everyone that helped contribute! 😄
What happens when it's finally cold outside and you match with your co-worker's puppy that came to work with them? You take a picture, of course! Could this be any cuter? 😍

We have so much to be grateful for this year, including our amazing staff and all the clients that trust in our care! From our family to yours, we wish you all a safe and very happy Thanksgiving! 🍁🍂
Celebrations are in order for Brooke, one of our Surgery technicians who just passed her Veterinary Technician National Exam! 🎉 We are so excited that she reached this milestone on her way to becoming a licensed veterinary technician (LVT). Congratulations, Brooke!
We know the holidays may look a little different this year, but there are still a few tips to keep in mind to ensure you and your pet have a safe and happy holiday season! Some holiday decor may be unintentionally hazardous to your pets! Be sure to keep in mind that while tinsel, ribbon and string may look like a fun toy for your cat we want to ensure it is never swallowed. Keep any salt dough ornaments out of reach of pets and never hang treats from hooks on your tree!
Baking and special foods are a big part of the holidays for many people! Just be sure to keep those that may be unsafe for pets out of reach. Be especially cautious with chocolate, macadamia nuts, xylitol (an artificial sweetener), grapes/raisins, garlic, and onions which can all be toxic to pets. Turkey bones and skin (or any rich, fatty foods) can also pose serious gastrointestinal problems, so be sure to stick to pet-safe treats for your furry family members!
HURRY! We have 18 hours of veterinarian & technician CE available on-demand through the end of the year! Watch some of our most popular lectures that include topics surrounding Geriatric Anesthesia, Coagulopathy, Autoimmune Diseases (IMHA, ITP, & IMPA), and more! There are 30 lectures available through December 31! Go to www.TXVeterinarianSymposium.com to register and attend before this event ends!
Keep in mind that some festive holiday plants can be toxic to pets! A great option is to use faux plants or make sure they are out of reach from your furry family members.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and happy holidays, from your friends at AVES! 🎄

🐾JOIN OUR GROWING TEAM! 🐾 AVES is currently seeking highly motivated specialty and emergency veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, customer service representatives, and more. Meet Penny! She is a sweet Mastiff mix who came to see our Surgery department after being found with a broken leg and taken to TRAPRS - Trapping, Rescue, and Pet Recovery Service! The cause of her fracture was unknown and due to the length of time since the fracture had first occurred as well as the severeness of her injury, conventional internal fixation using a plate and screws was not possible. Penny's injury required Dr. Kalis to use Fluoroscopy (a type of x-ray used to produce real-time video images) to place a minimally invasive External Fixator. This device uses a variety of rings, pins, bolts, and wires placed mainly on the outside of the leg to reduce the fracture and provide stability and support as the bone heals. At 4-weeks post-surgery, Penny's radiographs (x-rays) showed progressive bone healing, and when she returned 8 weeks after surgery, her radiographs showed complete healing! At that point, the entire fixator was able to be removed. She continues to do well at home, has a sweet disposition, and is still looking for her forever home! ❤️
It's our Client Service Team Appreciation Day! Today we celebrate our amazing co-workers who work tirelessly behind the scenes, helping to answer phone calls, schedule appointments, and so much more. We thought it would be a great time to shine a light on the individuals behind the phones! Get to know a little bit about the amazing people who help keep our hospital running each and every day!
Did you know that our board-certified veterinary surgeons perform many of the same or similar minimally invasive surgeries for pets as human surgeons do for people? Minimally invasive surgery causes less pain and promotes a faster return to comfort for pets. From arthroscopy, which allows us to visualize your pet's joints with a small camera, to thoracoscopy which allows a small camera to magnify and even manipulate organs in the chest, AVES surgeons utilize state-of-the-art equipment to provide the highest level of surgical care available. For more information visit https://austinvets.com/service/surgery-orthopedics/
As a 24/7 emergency hospital, AVES doctors and technicians are trained to expect the worst and be prepared to treat any patient brought through the door. The teamwork, compassion, and dedication that is second nature to our staff and required to help these patients is rarely captured on camera, but here's a glimpse behind the scenes of the work that is continuously happening within our hospital. Our team is seen here helping to coordinate the care of three emergency patients, gathering sample body fluids, placing IV catheters, and more. This seamless teamwork allows us to provide top-level care for each one of our patients. ❤️
Meet Burger! This sweet little bundle of joy is a 9.5-year-old Pug who was brought into our Neurology service back in November of 2019 for a head tilt and circling. After undergoing an MRI, Dr. Sutton was able to diagnose her with MUO (meningoencephalitis), a disease that affects the central nervous system. After a year of treatment with both our Neurology and Oncology departments, Burger recently received her LAST TREATMENT! 🎉 Congratulations, Burger!! You are one wonderful lady who steals the hearts of everyone you are around. ❤️
Our staff recently had the opportunity to attend a socially distant "Art of Triage" training session provided by one of our lead emergency and critical care technicians, Ryleigh. This training session provided greater insight into our triage protocols (the order in which emergent patients are seen, determined by critical need) and client communication to help us provide top-notch patient and client care when you come to see us through our emergency department. These internal continuing education opportunities are a part of what helps to make AVES a top-tier emergency and specialty hospital.
It's National Cat Health Month! With February designated as an ode to cats, it's a perfect time for pet owners to focus on the health of their feline friends. Talk to your primary care veterinarian about preventative care (including teeth cleanings!) and how you can keep your cat purring for years to come!
A big thank you to Roots Integrative Veterinary Care for the amazing cookies that they sent to us this week! Each department received custom homemade cookies designed specific to their service. How cute are these?!

Stay safe, Austin! We are currently open for emergencies with a limited staff. We want everyone to stay as safe as possible and recommend calling us at 512-343-2837 if you feel your pet is in need of emergent care. If you have a less urgent concern, please feel free to email us at info@austinvets.com and we will get back to you as quickly as possible.
We had some extra special help wishing all our patients a Happy Valentine's Day this year! 💕 Ms. Gresham's Kindergarten class helped to create some amazing valentines for our patients, and our hospital director's daughter helped to hand them out (i.e. read and hang them on their kennels). We hope this brought some joy to everyone's day and helped our clients know that their pets are loved each and every day they are under our care. We know that the class had a blast making these cards for our patients. Thank you, Ms. Gresham's class! Happy Valentine's Day!
AVES is proud to announce that our hospital is back to being fully operational! We are open 24/7 for emergencies and during normal business hours for specialty services.
As some of our specialty services begin to reopen today and weather conditions are expected to improve, we would like to take a minute to recognize some of our outstanding employees, who over the last four days worked harder than ever before to care for the pets of our community, despite losing power from Sunday to Wednesday. One of our amazing technicians may have said it best, "To my ECC technician/doctor friends, you all are my heroes. Over the last 3 days, I have seen you at your best in the worst of circumstances. There has been no power, no heat, no staff, no food, no showers, dwindling supplies, and an endless line of triages...you all continued to be available as much as possible to see Austin's sick and injured pets. Many of you spent the night at the hospital sleeping on a cold floor so those sick, critical animals could get care around the clock. Throughout the stress of trying to provide quality care without resources, lack of sleep, and lack of relief, you all remained compassionate and patient to both your four-legged patients and two-legged clients. Thank you for your dedication and sacrifice over this past week. Stay strong the sun is coming."

❗️Important Update❗️ Although the state recently announced that masks will no longer be mandatory and businesses will be able to open to 100%, AVES' current COVID-19 policies will remain in effect until further notice. We will continue to utilize curbside services and require our staff and clients interacting with our staff to wear masks. We look forward to a time when we can safely welcome clients back to our hospital. For more information regarding our current COVID-19 protocols, please visit our website, https://bit.ly/3bbBO9z.
While we tend to keep our messages happy and upbeat, we wanted to take a moment today to help share an important message regarding mental health in veterinary medicine. You may or may not know that the veterinary community has the highest suicide rate of any profession. This month we did not see the first or the last suicides in our industry, but we hope that by bringing awareness to this issue we can help others reach out for the support they need. Not One More Vet, Inc (which you may have seen abbreviated as NOMV) provides a safe space for veterinary professionals and helps ensure that not one more vet professional is lost to suicide. Remember to lift each other up with kindness, we are all fighting a different battle. nomv.org
Sometimes our patients just need a little extra TLC. This sweet little patient is Melody, who came to see our emergency department after experiencing a first-time seizure. Here she's with one of our amazing technicians, Ryleigh, who was able to provide her a little extra comfort and care while she stayed with us for observation.
