Avera Research Institute is participating in the National Registry for Surveillance and Epidemiology of Perinatal COVID-19 Infection. The National Registry is a collaboration between the American Academy of Pediatrics SONPM, the Vermont-Oxford Network (VON), and MedNAX (an organization of private neonatologists). Primary objectives are to inform (a) risk of different types of possible transmission of COVID-19 from infected mothers to newborn and (b) efficacy of different infection control practices. Avera is currently one of 264 sites, representing over 40 states, contributing data to this study. Results, to date, have indicated low risk of perinatal transmission of COVID-19 to newborns with about 1.8% of infants in national sample testing positive for COVID-19 within the first few days of birth. Findings have informed current neonatal guidelines for infection control practices.
